Label/Format: Bronze – Age of Man format with the original Island number, logo and distribution credits. These were later changed to the Bronze 302 catalogue number and EMI credits. (Please see my label scan).

Label Conditions: All four ultra clean and highly attractive with any spindle traces few and very faint.

Cat Number: ISLD 1.

Mode / Speed: Stereo / 33.3 rpm.

Warps: Assume all records I offer have no warping of any significance and all tracking is easy and effortless and should play on all turntables and even ‘budget’ decks.

Weight of these Records: 139 / 146 grams. Impressive weights for these records, issued at a time when vinyl was being used more sparingly and later pressed examples were much thinner too.

Country of Manufacture: England.

Rarity: The Island-Bronze early examples are harder to find in decent condition. This includes the fully laminated cover with fixed book, later ones were not laminated.

Brief Info: A very lavishly packaged double live set recorded in Birmingham. Well recorded with bags of atmosphere and excellent performances from the band the critics loved to hate. Even the inner sleeves (both are the same) have press clippings that state: ‘If this group make it I’ll have to commit suicide. From the first note you know you don’t want to hear any more. Uriah is watered down, tenth-rate Jethro Tull, only even more boring and inane’. Well not sure if the reviewer stuck to her word because prog fans loved them and their albums sold well enough to make them stars. This includes songs from their early great albums including ‘Look at Yourself’, ‘Demons and Wizards’ and ‘Magician’s Birthday’ and all selections will delight their loyal fans. This is a complete early Island-Bronze copy with intact book and fully laminated cover with both inners. The labels are gorgeous and as fresh as when made, the records have a few light superficial surface marks (unlined inners never helpful in that respect), but both play superbly with practically nothing unwanted.

Cover Grade and Format: Strong Excellent, a fully laminated cover – that’s inside and out. A gatefold format with an 8-page full colour book fixed inside. Printed and made in England with both illustrated inners.

Cover Front & Back: The laminate retains a fine shine and is fully adhered with no lifts or blisters of any significant note. Marks are few and light but some friction rubbing is evident around the rims shape, seen more under light. Less on the front than the back and being black, there are few hiding places and few will ever avoid it totally. The really good news is the lack of creasing of which there barely any. A couple of small ones on the front but barely any of real note on the back the odd corner tip trace apart. .

Cover Inner Gatefold: The inside is in super condition with incredibly shiny clear laminate and great artwork and band information. The 8-page book is ultra secure as made with THREE staples, later ones only had two. All pages clean and attractive with only minor handling traces and no tears or creasing. A wonderfully lavish inside that has more than stood the test of time.

Top & Bottom Edges: The top pair are superb with barely any wear. The bottom pair are similar for most but have rubbed near the left corner. Resting edges rarely escape a little rubbing.

Right Edge(s), and Type: Clean, quite sharp with little wear and no feathering or trimming. Odd tiny burr trace viewed end-on. Records entered on these right outside edges.

Spine and Text: The spine retains practically all it’s laminate with just a couple of tiny cracks near the bottom which is unusually fine on these heavy-duty covers. Opening and closing over the years will crack the surface which often means peeling and shedding of the protective surface. Few traces here and most-all is solid and clear too. The actual spine is solid, straight, uncompressed and square, both right edges meet up perfectly together. All text is pristine perfect and unworn.

Corners: Mainly small tip rubs and generally fine to very fine shape retained. As stated, the spine bottom spreads a little further to the right.

Cover Summary: An attractive example of this early-made lavish cover. One that should please many collectors.

The Inners: Both inners have aged a little with some light toning mostly around the edges and light darkening. I don’t want to over-emphasise this because it is only light and both inners look right for their considerable vintage. Both have the Bronze ISLD 1 numbers – beware of substitutions from later copies are they are very similar but will have full Bronze numbers instead. Barely any creasing and edges intact – one small bottom edge split was repaired neatly by myself. These inners are the same design and include reviews of the day which include the infamous ‘Suicide’ review by Melissa Mills.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: Both near EX: a fine visual pair that are very clean, shiny, intense black and quite heavily pressed. A pair with light surface marks that have no sound. Visually these two records should please many collectors (but not the highly discerning).

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippets or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing B&W speakers that include the legendary tweeter from their awesome Nautilus range that reveals every blemish or minuscule sound present on any record.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: Both records play above their high visual grading with practically nothing to fault. Strong, distortion-free sound, all frequencies are sharp and clear - sound quality is very high with a wide dynamic range and very detailed sound. Any surface sound registers little and no pops or clicks were noted and this is an exceptional clean pressing. The fine surface blemishes are ignored and few copies will outperform these Island-Bronze pressings I feel sure. This set sets a high standard and will prove quite difficult to find significantly better and can be highly recommended.

Now one of the most established sellers on Ebay and still offering the finest and most accurately described and graded records I can find. The record’s cover will be placed within a BRAND NEW soft protective sleeve and the actual record will be professionally cleaned on my Moth Pro vacuum system to give ultimate clean grooves and playing surfaces and the best possible looks and ultimate sound quality. You will NOT get tired, dull looking, dust infested records inside worn and foggy covers with tatty inners from this seller and that’s a promise and guarantee. All records are posted in professional thick boxes (NOT Mailers or Cruciforms, these do not offer maximum protection). The record(s) REMOVED from their main cover to avoid edge splits and placed within a brand new polylined inner. The record’s original inner will be included if available. SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT neccessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
