Label Conditions: Both very clean and attractive with hardly a spindle trace to be seen. When you have to search for these under a magnifying glass, it should tell it’s own story.

Mode / Speed: Stereo / 33.3 rpm.

Warps: Assume all records I offer have no warping of any significance and all tracking is easy and effortless and should play on all turntables and even ‘budget’ decks.

Weight of this Record: 127 grams. A good weight for this one.

Rarity: Moderate, for a prog-rock album, but far harder with a clean cover, inner and hardly played record.

Brief Info: Fourth album and their first to feature cover artwork by Roger Dean. A band scorned by the critics of the day but their albums proved popular within the progressive rock field and this is arguably their best album. Whether the gorgeous cover attracted more attention or not, this proved to be their breakthrough album and it sold well. A lovely sleeve in super condition and a well produced record. Quality songs with catchy melodies all performed brilliantly, quite why those critics picked on them so harshly remains a mystery to me. This is a terrific early issue with the Island credits and number and the deep large punched EMI matrixes, most collectors and fans will enjoy this.

Cover Grade and Format: EXCELLENT(+): an unlaminated gatefold format with matt smooth surfaces, this includes the lyric inner and superb artwork by Roger Dean. It was printed and made in England by Tinsley Robor and includes the Island i distribution credits.

Cover Front: Wonderful artwork from the master graphic artist Roger Dean, and here seen to nigh-on maximum advantage with very little to fault on this impressive front. Clean, fresh and attractive with any marks few and very faint as seen critically under angled light. The lack of creasing, sticker tears and impressions are all bonuses as this is prone. This will not prove easy to find much better.

Cover Back: The back is largely the same with just a fine and very light rim arc rub near the top edge, but little else to fault apart from the odd tiny corner tip rub.

Cover Inner Gatefold: Impressively clean and minimal traces of any wear and still very clean again.

Top Edges: Superb, straight and barely any wear at all.

Bottom Edges: A little patchy rubbing, most on the front near the right corner.

Right Edge(s), and Type: Both in lovely condition. The front edge is closed with a real edge that is tucked under, this has minimal traces of wear at all and again straight. The open back is clean, mostly sharp with any burring or thickening very light as viewed end-on, this is guaranteed untrimmed.

Spine and Text: A very impressive and fairly thick spine. Straight and very solid with just one very gentle central compression. Folded a fraction off-square, so the edges not quite flush, but only very sligthly so. All the text pristine perfect and the flow-round graphic practically the same. Even the fold hinges retain nigh-on full ink coverage with no fading and hardly even a chip. These details make the difference between average and exceptional.

Corners: Mostly light to the odd near moderate tip rub (bottom front right), mostly with very fine shape retained.

Cover Summary: A very strong all-round example of this somewhat wear-prone early 70’s cover, one that will prove very difficult to find much better. This highly attractive Roger Dean design should please many, if not most collectors, but not quite for the perfectionists.

The Inner Sleeve: EXCELLENT(+): and in arguably even harder to find in top conditions being very prone to ringwear, friction rubs and especially edge splits. Double-sided, unlined and including lyrics. This one has very deep colour and no penetrating ring wear, tears or creasing. Gentle rim impression is near impossible to avoid, here very light indeed, as are any small edge rubs. These were not lined and few escape edge splits, but somewhat against the odds, this one has – and it has NO repairs or enhancements. Original and including the ILPS 9193 number, these are not seen a great deal better easily.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: EXCELLENT: and this hardly does this super record full justice. A very fine visual copy that is very clean, shiny, intense black and solidly pressed. A copy with only modest plays on the evidence and offers very fine, clean sound. Any surface marks are mainly few and light, with even finer traces seen under angled light, there are NO penetrating scratches on this record. Visually a lovely, first matrix issue record that should please many collectors.

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippets or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing B&W speakers that include the legendary tweeter from their awesome Nautilus range that reveals every blemish or miniscule sound present on any record.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: This excellent progressive record plays even above it’s high visual grading with very little to fault. This has strong, distortion-free sound, all frequencies are sharp and clear - sound quality is very high with a wide dynamic range and very detailed sound and a lovely clear production. These always sound at their best from a first EMI -1U matrix pressing. No pops and just the odd minor sporadic tick were noted and this is a very clean pressed disc with minimal surface sound traces. Few copies will outperform this ISLP pressing significantly I feel sure and I enjoyed this immensely. Just the odd polite reminder you are listening to a vintage over 40-year-old record, and not a squeaky clean digital version. Nothing of any note spoilt my pleasure when grading this wonderful record. This copy will prove difficult to find significantly better and can be highly recommended.

The record’s cover will be placed within a BRAND NEW soft protective sleeve and the actual record will be professionally cleaned on my new VPI-17 Pro vacuum system to give ultimate clean grooves and playing surfaces and the best possible looks and ultimate sound quality. You will NOT get tired, dull looking, dust infested records inside worn and foggy covers with tatty inners from this seller and that’s a promise and guarantee. All records are posted in professional boxes (NOT Mailers, these do not offer any real protection). The record(s) are REMOVED from their main cover to avoid edge splits and placed within a brand new polylined inner. The record’s original inner will be included if available. The boxes are then reinforced with at least TWO, ULTRA THICK stiffeners for maximum extra protection – these are FOUR TIMES thicker than commercial stiffeners and are custom-made for oneadayrecords. SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT necessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
