Label Conditions: Both immaculate: very clean, fresh and highly attractive with any spindle traces tiny, very few and faint. Probably the best Island-credit Bronze pair I have seen on this album.

Mode / Speed: Stereo / 33.3 rpm.

Warps: Assume all records I offer have no warping of any significance and all tracking is easy and effortless and should play on all turntables and even ‘budget’ decks.

Weight of this Record: 141 grams. Above average and a very solid record.

Country of Manufacture: England.

Rarity: Moderate, but far harder as a first issue with a clean cover, inner and hardly played record. This is an exceptional copy and early pressing.

Brief Info: Fourth album and their first to feature cover artwork by Roger Dean. A band scorned by the critics of the day but their albums proved popular within the progressive rock field and this is arguably their best album. Whether the gorgeous cover attracted attention or not, this was their breakthrough album and it sold well. A lovely sleeve in superb condition and a well produced record. Quality songs with catchy melodies all performed brilliantly, quite why those critics picked on them so harshly remains a mystery to me. This is a terrific first issue with the Island credits and number and the deep large punched EMI matrixes, most collectors and fans will enjoy this.

Cover Grade and Format: EXCELLENT(++): an unlaminated gatefold with matt smooth surfaces, this includes the lyric inner sleeve and superb artwork by Roger Dean. It was printed and made in England by Tinsley Robor and includes the Island i distribution credits.

Cover Front: Beautiful Roger Dean artwork in superb condition. This front has little to fault at all with any marks minuscule and barely any rubbing or creasing at all. Incredibly clean, fresh and hugely attractive with no sticker marks or issues. Deep rich unfaded colour also, this front will take some beating.

Cover Back: Very similar again, as it should be as it was cover-protected almost from new by the one owner. The odd corner tip rub and faint surface trace blemish seen critically under light, but the lack of creasing, rubbing and ring wear are all major pluses, like the front, this still more wear-prone back will never prove easy to find better.

Cover Inner Gatefold: One tiny mark on the right edge and one gentle surface crease (look hard), that apart, practically as made and looking terrific.

Top Edges: Superb, straight and barely any wear.

Bottom Edges: Similar with just a moderate rub on the back right corner area, lesser on the other ends with the rest showing little wear at all.

Right Edge(s), and Type: Both in super condition. The front edge is closed with a real edge that is tucked under, this has minimal traces of rubbing on the actual edge itself. The open back is clean, sharp with barely any burring or thickening, this is guaranteed untrimmed.

Spine and Text: A superb and thick spine as the originals had. Very solid, straight, uncompressed and folded square, so the edges meet up perfectly together and parallel for maximum neatness for the more discerning. All the text is present and unworn as is the graphic itself. They rarely get seen better.

Corners: Light to moderate tip rubs with impressive very fine to excellent (or better) shape retained.

Cover Summary: A very strong all-round example of this highly wear-prone early 70’s cover, one that will prove very difficult to find much better. This highly attractive Roger Dean cover should please many, if not most collectors, these seldom seen quite this clean and devoid of wear.

The Inner Sleeve: EXCELLENT(+): and in real terms even harder to find in top conditions being very prone to ringwear, friction rubs and especially edge splits. Double sided, unlined and including lyrics. This one has very deep colour and only gentle rim impression with any rub traces ultra faint indeed. Barely any creasing and all the edges unsplit with NO repairs. The top opening is wide and deeply recessed, this also undamaged, crispa and very neat. This also an original and including the ILPS 9193 number, these are not seen a great deal better easily, they were never lined.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: EXCELLENT(++) to MINT(-): a superb example and one of the earliest pressed stampers I have ever seen. A very fine visual copy that is very clean, shiny, intense black and very solidly pressed. A copy hardly even played on the evidence and offering magnificent clean sound. Any surface marks are almost minuscule – ultra faint traces only on side one with utmost scrutiny under light, barely anything at all on two. Visually a gorgeous first issue record that should please most-all collectors.

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippets or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing B&W speakers that include the legendary tweeter from their awesome Nautilus range that reveals every blemish or miniscule sound present on any record.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: This quality progressive record plays even above it’s high visual grading with nothing to fault. This has strong, distortion-free sound, all frequencies are sharp and clear - sound quality is very high with a wide dynamic range and very detailed sound and a lovely clear production. These always sound at their best from a first EMI -1U matrix pressing. No pops or clicks were noted and this is a very clean pressed disc. Few copies will match, let alone outperform this ISLP pressing I feel sure. Musically, my favourite Uriah Heep album with some very impressive songs and played to perfection by their best-loved members. Nothing spoilt my pleasure when grading this wonderful record, this copy will prove very difficult to find better and can be strongly recommended.

The record’s cover will be placed within a BRAND NEW soft protective sleeve and the actual record will be professionally cleaned on my new VPI-17 Pro vacuum system to give ultimate clean grooves and playing surfaces and the best possible looks and ultimate sound quality. You will NOT get tired, dull looking, dust infested records inside worn and foggy covers with tatty inners from this seller and that’s a promise and guarantee. All records are posted in professional boxes (NOT Mailers, these do not offer any real protection). SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT necessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
