RARE ...Original Russian-only issue of this sort, limited edition from approx 25 years ago, hard to find to say the least and only to get rarer by the day...

TWO LP SET, a gatefold cover basically hooked together albums, LED  ZEPPELIN famous 1969 - 1970 albums "Volume II" and "Volume III"... the text on the covers (Russian) is unique and the sound quality bright and dynamic like that of direct metal mastering from original pressing sources.

The "brown bomber" was the second Zeppelin album, thrusting the famed band into superstardom...A chugging monster, derailed into a lengthy free-form ju-ju freak-out. Then 'The Lemon Song' reverts to straight-ahead blues-rock pastiche...'Whole Lotta Love'...has to be the heaviest thing one may run across....The album ends with a far-out blues number called 'Bring It On Home', during which Rob contributes some very convincing moaning and harp-playing

Riff rock had been what Jimmy Page's former band, the Yardbirds, were all about, and on Led Zeppelin's second album, released, like its predecessor, in 1969, the inventive guitarist demonstrated that he'd indeed learned his lessons well. Witness "Whole Lotta Love," a woozy epic based on one simple, head-banging-friendly guitar riff. Or the mock-dramatic "Heartbreaker," propelled by far more intricate but similarly effective note squashing. Between Page's sonic wizardry, John Bonham beating his drums into submission ("Moby Dick"), and the juice running down Robert Plant's leg ("The Lemon Song"), Led Zeppelin here just about succeeded in raising rock & roll excess to an art form. From the first grinding notes of the famous vamp that introduces "Whole Lotta Love," LED ZEPPELIN II announces for all to hear that they are the definitive hard rock band of their generation. But before the listener can even settle into the groove, things takes a hard left turn into a spacey new rhythm, exotically flavored by Page's droning feedback and innovative use of a violin bow. By tune's end, Zeppelin has repeatedly toyed with the listener's expectations.

This subversive quality distinguishes most of the arrangements on LED ZEPPELIN II, as in the soft/hard dynamic shifts of "What Is And What Should Never Be," the gospelish mood of "Thank You," the rocking vamps and jammer rhythms of "Heartbreaker" and "Living Loving Maid," and the rural echoes of "Ramble On."

Many people know this album as the record that contains the immortal "Immigrant Song" song about as far as the average self-described "Led-Head" has cut their little baby teeth into prior to purchasing the album. And why not? It is a hit song if I've ever seen one. Galloping rhythms, trademark Robert Plant wails, groovin' drums and bass, etc. And yet, this is possibly the most over-valued song on a very under-respected album. While many of you sit back and attempt to take in the blasphemous statement I've just made, allow me to elaborate. The track is undoubtedly a Zeppelin classic, but it is fairly over praised. Only two-and-a-half minutes on length simply can't compare to the mournful genius of something like the seven-and-a-half minute long blues masterpiece "Since I've Been Loving You". It is obvious that length doesn't necessarily equal quality, but in those seven minutes, the band says far much more musically than the opener ever could, banshee-wailing or not.

The production through out is loaded with amusing gimmicks like phasing, primitive synthesizers, creepy string arrangements, distorted vocals, and acoustic instrumentation, and it never gets dull. Of course, some of the country-blues and folk influences they parade around already had been assimilated by other British rockers like the Stones. But Jimmy Page actually has it down better than they do ("Tangerine"), while Robert Plant adds to the stew by getting memorably weird on some of the tracks ("Gallows Pole").

Plant loved Tolkien and Page loved the occult, they put them on a banner and wave them around. Gentle and breezy and folky, but they inject suitable amounts of skull-crackingly intense rockers....

CONDITION: The cover: rated: VG++ extremely thin material, like thick paper, in GREAT condition considering the delicacy... Still has a fresh appearance -- there are no delete marks, no split seams, and no writing  ... VERY collection worthy ...

The vinyl: Rated: M- both discs, all 4 sides are VERY spotlessly Clean and glossy with very enjoyable CLEAN audio  ...play back should not reveal alarming distracting surface problems ...  both labels are clean
