TREM – SHEER TALENT EPUnkut Recordings, 1998
When the labels first release, Trem’s “Sheer Talent” dropped in Jan. 1998, it helped to define the still-developing Melbourne sound in a market that was craving new material. It also unleashed to a broader audience an MC with the wit of a young Lord Finesse combined with a flair for wordplay reminiscent of Nas back when he was Nasty, coupled together with a definite homegrown sound. Backed by the production talents of Jase and Prowla (Nuff Said) who were responsible for the beats behind 7L & Esoteric’s classic “Protocol” the 12” was an underground hit. “Nineteen 92” and “Sheer Talent” were classic brag-rap staples, while “Two Cent Piece” dished the dirt on corrupt cops and transit police. If that wasn’t enough, the fledgling talents of Bob Balans and Rob Nat were showcased on the bonus track, “Distinguished Gentlemen”. Limited to a run of only 350 copies, this vinyl-only treat remains a highly sought after item for those who slept.
