The Soft Machine (bei der Wiederveröffentlichung auch "Volume One" genannt) ist das Debüt-Album der britischen Jazzrock-Band Soft Machine, veröffentlicht 1968.

Gegründet 1966, veröffentlichten Soft Machine (eine der zentralen Bands der Canterbury-Szene) dieses Studio-Album während ihrer ersten US-Tournee 1968.

Die allererste Pressung hatte ein Klappcover mit einer Uhrwerk-ähnlichen, drehbaren Scheibe, durch deren Löcher Photos der Bandmitglieder sichtbar wurden.

Bei den Nachpressungen wurde nicht nur diese Scheibe weggelassen (stattdessen war zunächst nur noch der langweilige grüne Hintergrund abgebildet!), sondern es wurden auch die beiden Photos des nackten Mädchens auf Rückseite und Innenseite zensiert - indem kurzerhand ein Bikini darüber retuschiert wurde!

Dies ist die original-Erstpressung, mit dem Spezial-Cover und beiden Photos unzensiert.
Leider ist die drehbare Scheibe abhanden gekommen!

Das Cover hat allgemeine Abnutzungserscheinungen, rechte und obere Kante des vorderen Teils sind ganz offen, und am Einschub oben ca. 10cm.

Das interessante daran ist, daß man das komplette Hintergrundbild zu sehen bekommt, das normalerweise zum Teil vom Cover verdeckt wird :-) - siehe Photos.

Die LP ist noch schön erhalten - sie hat leichte Wischer und Haarkratzer, aber nichts schlimmes, und läuft durch mit dezentem Knistern an ein paar Stellen.
   

English:

The Soft Machine (also titled "Volume One" as a reissue) is the debut album by the British jazz rock band Soft Machine, released in 1968.

Founded in 1966, Soft Machine (one of the central bands in the Canterbury scene) recorded and released this studio album during their 1968 tour of the USA.

The original first pressing came in a gatefold pressing with a "clockwork" moving wheel inside the front sleeve which had pictures of the band peering through various holes.

Not only did subsequent re-pressings omit this wheel (at first simply displaying the boring green background colour!), but also did the people at Probe Records censor the naked woman on both back and inner sleeve - by retouching a bikini over the photos!

This is the true first pressing, with gatefold gimmick cover and both photos unretouched.
Unfortunately, the moving wheel has gone missing!

The sleeve has general wear, right and top seam of the front are split, and top seam of back about 10cm.

The interesting thing is that like this you get to see the whole background picture of the band, which is usually partly covered by the sleeve :-) - see photos.

The LP is in nice condition - some superficial marks, but nothing serious - plays through with occasional light crackle in some parts.
