The experience of buying records on Ebay is ruined if, when they arrive, you discover that they are either not in the condition stated or have been damaged in the post! For this reason I describe all my items in detail, and only post using strong sturdy packaging. They are also from a non-smoking and pet-free home. Note that my postage offer still stands. The Smiths - BBC Transcription Disc - 1983

This auction is for an achingly-rare 'transcription disc' carrying the Smiths track This Charming Man, in recognition of this title which was performed by The Smiths on the BBC television programme 'Top Of The Pops' on 24th November 1983. These transcription discs are extremely rare, and were produced by the BBC to promote the band on their radio stations. The discs were intended for play only by the stations to which they were sent within a limited time frame and it is often said that they were even provided to the stations with a hammer using which they were to destroy the disc after playing! This one has survived, having originally been sent to Italy for radio play and it is thought that there are very few still in existence. The vinyl is complete with its original BBC issued die-cut sleeve and even has the original 'cue sheet' (not a photocopy) with the typed list of tracks and biographical details (see photos). Transcription discs are highly prized by collectors, owing to their obscurity and rare nature. This item brings the owner a real sense of history when you consider the artist line-up, the biographical details and the timing of this broadcast when the Smiths were together and in their prime. This commemorates the first appearance by The Smiths on Top Of The Pops and is therefore particularly collectable. Of course, these transcription discs are also snapped up by collectors of the other artists on the playlist and so rarely appear for sale - if you are interested, get this while you can!
The record I would grade as strong excellent, having been played as intended but with only minor surface marks on the vinyl. There is also a radio library sticker and a date stamp on one side of the labels in Italian which are in keeping with the history of the item and do not detract from the condition in any way. The cue sheet is in excellent condition with no tears or creases and, notably, no pen marks or other writing which I understand is not often the case. The outer sleeve also has several usage stickers in the top left corner, but are consistent again with the character of the item and the sleeve looks very nice being in excellent condition otherwise with no major signs of wear. Overall, it is an item with character and great appeal to collectors which is in terrific condition given its intended purpose and fate.
