Description

The experience of buying records on Ebay is ruined if, when they arrive, you discover that they are either not in the condition stated or have been damaged in the post! For this reason I describe all my items in detail, and only post using strong sturdy packaging in a 'box' mailer with the record outside the sleeve to avoid seam-splitting. They are also from a non-smoking and pet-free home.
I accept returns and offer a full refund if you are not happy with your purchase.

The Smiths - 'I Started Something I Couldn't Finish' Solid-Centre 7" - 1987

Catalogue No. RT 198 - Rough Trade Records

As the practice of collecting Smiths and Morrissey records continues to grow and develop, collectors are increasingly documenting subtle and more obscure differences between pressing versions. It is well established that Morrissey favoured the use of the four-pronged 'push-out' centre in the manufacture of the 7" singles which The Smiths released, and that there may have been a contractual obligation for the pressing plants to use this 'push-out' format. Nonetheless, it seems that solid-centre pressing versions of many, and possibly all, of the Smiths Rough Trade 7" singles have made their way out into the market at some point. There is some debate about whether these solid-centre versions were actually slightly different pressings intended for export to markets in other countries for some of the singles, and the apparent presence of small differences in the text on the labels would lend support to this argument. In the case of 'I Started Something I Couldn't Finish', however, the labels in this solid-centre version on offer in this auction are identical to those of the more common 'push-out' UK pressing. Indeed, there is some evidence from the Scott Piering archive that solid-centre pressings of 'I Started Someting' for the UK market were (at least initially) rejected and returned to the record company. The solid-centre pressing for auction here is of the same appearance as the common UK 'push-out' centre pressings, and has no 'anti-slip' serrations; the matrix number of this solid-centre pressing are "RT 198 A-1U-1-1-5" and "RT 198 B-1U-1-1-2". What is interesting is that I also have a 'push-out' centre pressing with the identical matrix numbers of "RT 198 A-1U-1-1-5" and "RT 198 B-1U-1-1-2", with identical spacings between the etchings etc, which must therefore have used the same pressing plates and which I will also include in the auction. For the completist, I will also include in the auction a first pressing edition of this 7" single which has the hand-etched matrix numbers "RT 198 A1" and "RT 198 B1". All three of these records and sleeves are in superb collectable condition (see below).

The vinyl and labels of the solid-centre pressing are in strong excellent condition with only very light surface marks in just a few places; the record has clearly seen very little, if any, play, retaining its original 'sheen' throughout. The outer sleeve is in near mint condition, with practically no signs of wear and handling. The other two 7" singles included for comparison are both in near mint condition, both records and sleeves, and appear practically 'as-new'. Please see the accompanying photos for more detail; note that the 'Ebay ID' lettering is just on the pictures and not on the items themselves.

All my auctions start at 1P and have NO RESERVE. They are all 100% genuine, original versions. Some are in mint/new condition and some are used; all will go to the highest bidder. I offer a money-back guarantee if anything is described incorrectly. Postage and Packing is 2.80 in the UK for untracked and uninsured standard postage, this is subsidised by myself and the actual costs to me will usually be higher. Please do consider paying the extra 70p for tracked postage since there is nothing that can be done to find out what happened if the parcel is lost when standard postage is chosen. Shipping costs are greater for overseas buyers, but still subsidised and very good value; please check prices by using the options above or feel free to ask. Extra items are sent at no extra postage charge to the buyer (see below). I always take great care to package items well with strong mailing materials.

See my other auctions for related rare items here. If multiple auctions are won at the same time (within a week), I will charge only the postage cost for the heaviest item and pay the remainder myself. This is the case wherever you live. If you are planning to bid, but cannot be around at the end of the auction, I have found this free site to be useful; note that I am not affiliated with the site in any way!
