The Smiths - 'Hand In Glove' Rare 1st Issue (Manchester Address on Sleeve) 7" - 1983

This is not one of the recent Rhino re-issue singles, but rather an authentic original release of the Smiths' debut single released in May 1983. It may be identified as a first pressing by the 'indented' centre style of the label and the 'Glad Hips Music 1983' credit, which was changed on later pressings. The sleeve is also distinguishable in that a Manchester contact address (70 Portland Street) and phone number are given at the foot on the reverse. Being the first pressing of the first release by The Smiths this item has become highly sought-after amongst collectors, but what makes this item so remarkable is the truly outstanding condition in which it has been kept.

The vinyl and labels are in near mint condition, possibly being unplayed. The vinyl retains its bright and glossy appearance and there are just a few of the lightest 'hairline' fine surface marks when held to the light. The labels are completely new and unmarked. The sleeve is also in near mint condition, which is very rare. The corners and edges are sharp, and there are barely any impression marks due to the vinyl being inside; largely due to the record having been stored outside of its sleeve since being in my possession. There is no damage or marks anywhere on the sleeve, and there is only one very small and minor crease near the top left hand edge. Normally, the silvered surface is very easily removed; but in this case there is practically no evidence of this anywhere on the sleeve. All in all it would be very difficult to find a copy which has been better preserved from 1983 and it pretty much looks as if it had been bought from a shop today.
