Jordan Muscott, aka The Railway Raver, was an artist operating on Richard D. James’ Rephlex records in the late ‘90s and early ‘00s. Drop acid not bombs was his first release on the label and it is the business!

Despite the title of this record sounding like a catchphrase from the 90s rave scene, Drop Acid Not Bombs gives more of a nod towards early Chicago and Detroit than it does to Madchester. This sets Muscott apart from many of his contemporaries on Rephlex at the time, he was serving up low-slung, soulful, acid-house jams that veered away from the tougher IDM and jungle influenced sound that the label was becoming associated with.

This record is at its most impressive when Muscott keeps things withheld and melodic, as with what we think are the LPs two choice cuts, Keith’s Trumpets and the impeccable My Lacoste (577 N Mix), a track that’s been on repeat here at Six Axle HQ. This LP might even be a contender for the award of ‘best fucking track name out there’, with the sleazily titled Elizabethan Pornograph Smugglers.
