'SCRATCHING THE SURFACE'
on the original LIBERTY RECORDS LBS 83199 from Vintage 1968
Tony 'T.S.' McPhee had been around a bit even before this LP saw the light. From Herbal Mixture, to several sessions backing original American Bluesmen, notably Champion Jack Dupree and with The Groundhogs as British backing band for John Lee Hooker, even calling the band 'John Lee's Groundhogs'! He also got among several other of the Blue-Horizon lable artists.
Still playing and touring today, McPhee has an extensive catalogue to draw from, and that includes many Groundhogs records too. 'Split' was their biggest hit record, which introduced them to a widening audience. Previously they'd got some attention for 'Thank Christ For The Bomb' - but neither 'Blues Obituary' or this LP had made a dent in sales for them before that.
So - this gem was hiding back in the shadows of Fleetwood Mac, Chicken Shack, Savoy Brown and of course John Mayall's Bluesbreakers.
Now revered among blues-rock collectors, this nice scarce platter holds several delights among the grooves - and how great it is to have in this LOVELY condition!
I have owned this LP and handled and stored with ULTIMATE care, & it shows why after 41 years this is in SPECTACULAR condition!!
(my hand holds the record in the photo - supported by my finger under the lable and only gently resting at the outer edge against my palm - I avoid touching the grooves - and will not be 'scratching the surfaces' of my records!)
The vinyl is in NM- shape, plays GREAT on both sides and with fantastic sound. There are just a couple of very light superficial scuff marks... but not anything drastic, certainly nothing feel-able at all and not detracting from the FULL shine of the disc.
The lables are clean and bright, NM.
The laminated cover is EX overall - some slight wear, a little separation of the laminate.
A VERY worthwhile album, & a copy that's definitely A KEEPER!!
