This rare album was the first to be issued on the Tradition Century label, and like the others is reputed to be a small press of only 100 copies that were sold at folk club performances. The group were from the Mansfield / Derbyshire area and formed in June 1970 and were soon running their own club in Boughton. Due to its rarity, this record has only been heard by a small handful of collectors, but it is becoming very a highly sought after item as it has a sound akin to Folkal Point. The music ranges from traditional songs such as “High Germany†through to work by contemporary songwriters such as Tom Paxton and Ewan MacColl. Their style is easy going and is neither too traditional nor too close to the folk rock scene and so has a wide appeal. The draw for collectors is always a female vocalist, this factor being able to multiply many times, the price of an obscure LP. The Fo’c’sle were blessed with a fine singer, Elizabeth Jack†and she has a lovely clear tone that sounds effortless in its delivery. If you get chance, listen to “The Highland Fairy Lullaby†which proves once and for all, that England has produced many fine singers, most of whom never received their due acclaim. This copy is in solid EX /EX condition, but due to its rarity a sensible reserve price has been attached.
