RARE Blue Note (5057), Mono, DG, 767 Lexington, RVG, "Ear"
On his second outing for the Blue Note label, Jay Jay Johnson slides confidently into the bop arena, establishing himself as both a leader and trombonist de haut en bas. And the bop arena doesn't leave him hanging: Wynton Kelly, Charles Mingus, Kenny Clarke, and Sabu, in diplomatic fashion, help convey the young musician through this batch of standards and (a few) Johnson originals. The center label indicates an original 1950's Blue Note release: 767 Lexington Ave. address, mono, deep groove, "RVG" and the "ear" inscribed on both sides' dead wax.
