Description
I bought this set new in 1982. When it was first announced I pre-ordered it through my local record store and got one of the lower serial numbers -1869 (see picture).
I played my favorite albums once (Abbey Road, White Album, Sgt Pepper, and Rubber Soul) once to record them and played Abbey Road 2 additional times for friends. Other than that the records have remained unplayed. Once CDs came out I remove the recording of the other albums from my to-do list.
The box does show some sign of wear after a couple of years as can be seen in the pictures. The brass hardware is also exhibiting some tarnishing after 30+ years.
Please let me know if you have any questions or would like a specific photo.
I have extracted the below from Wikipedia to provide a bit more background on the set.
"Release
Released with much anticipation in early October 1982, The Collection was lauded by critics and Beatles fans worldwide for the superb sound, and sold-out completely within the first year. Mobile Fidelity Sound Lab (MFSL) pressed a second run of the Beatles Boxed Set for a total production run of 25,000 over the next two years or until October 1985.[2] Today, The Collection sells in online auctions for an average of $1125 for a near-flawless condition, NM/NM set (the vinyl LPs and jackets in "as new" condition, but the boxed set has been opened and played sparingly if at all) and also with no corrosion on the brass hinges... and up to $4000 IF it is Factory Sealed in the original Mobile Fidelity Sound Labs Factory Shipping Carton with all seals and packing materials intact in online auctions. Each album was pressed on black vinyl by the Victor Company of Japan ensuring superior sound quality. The album covers were replaced with photographs of tape boxes and log sheet. The original album covers were included in a booklet which also featured a certificate of authenticity as this was a limited edition collection. Missing from this collection were all of the Beatles' singles, extended Play and a few miscellaneous tracks that did not appear on their original UK albums.
