The Beatles Stereo Get Back Sessions 27th January 1969 - 7 disc set
During the filming of the "Get Back sessions", the film crew utilised two Nagra mono reel-to-reel tape recorders to capture nearly every moment of the sessions during which a Beatle was present. Each Nagra recorder was assigned to a camera and each time that camera began filming a beep would be heard on the Nagra tapes to allow for synchronisation of the sound at a later date. Short reels running at very high speed were used, thus allowing approximately 16 minutes per reel. Since two Nagra units were running, the minute or so to change over reels on one unit would usually be captured by the other unit.
Standard film clapboards were used for each camera, but only when the film rolls were changed (rather than for each time the camera was turned on). Each new film roll resulted in a fresh slate number. Sometimes the new slate number was announced onto the Nagra unit associated with the camera that has just been reloaded with film. Other times it was recorded into both Nagra units.
Although in general both cameras operated at the same time, as mentioned there are small one to two minute sections where only one tape machine recorded, while the other was reloaded with a fresh reel to reel tape. There are however three periods on the 27th January when for approximately a whole tape reel (16 minutes) only one Nagra unit was in operation. These periods have been noted in then track analysis.
Using the two mono Nagra recordings from cameras A & B, these stereo recordings have been produced. The stereo space produced by these two mono recordings often is stationary, but at times moves as the camera /microphone crew moved and shifted their locations and points of interest during the days sessions.
