Up for an auction is the incredibly rare 1st pressing Vee-Jay Records extended play promotional copy of The Beatles “Souvenir of Their Visit to America” released on March 23, 1964. Vee-Jay Records shipped these promotional copies directly to broadcasters, including radio station DJs, as well as music journalists several months before the official release using the original native single envelope mailers, which are extremely rare today. The currently listed mailer and Monarch pressing copy weren’t shipped by mail but were delivered by a Vee-Jay carrier from the company’s office directly to a local radio station, which explains the blank address form on the “Singles of Significance” mailer. I can’t recall any auction where a Vee-Jay promotional copy was sold as a full set featuring the mailer.  This promotional DJ copy was pressed in Los Angeles at the Monarch pressing plant. As you probably already know, many early records pressed at the Monarch plant prior to the early 60s didn’t include the “MR” stamp and therefore, you’ll find only the other plant's identifier in the form of the Delta “△” symbol in the runout groove of this promotional copy. One more important feature identifying this promo copy as a very early 1st pressing  is the label design. Unlike the 2nd pressing which had 2 label variations with the “ASK ME WHY” title written on 1 line in bold font on the label, this 1st pressing promo copy contains the title of the track on 2 lines in regular font used for all of the track titles. Original 1st print Vee-Jay Records white promotional labels with a “PROMOTIONAL COPY” banner, blue VJ brackets logo, and the catalog number “VJ EP 1-903” located under “The Beatles” banner at the top of the label as oppose to the bottom which is found on the 2nd pressing labels that have the “VJ” and “EP” written together without a space. This 1st pressing promotional copy comes with the “Left & Right Brackets” sleeve which comes across much rarer than the “Column Brackets” sleeve. If the condition of the vinyl is added to all of the previously mentioned merits of this issue, then it could be stated with confidence that finding a similar copy is practically impossible. The 1st Monarch plant Los Angeles pressing with the very early 1st matrix numbers and Delta △ numbers: Side 1 – 64-3915 △51772 URJ; Side 2 – 64-3916 △51772x URJ.

The Vee-Jay Records "Singles of Significance" mailer and sleeve are in Near Mint Minus condition. I grade the vinyl as somewhere between Very Good Plus and Excellent Minus. The vinyl has some very light non-feelable surface scuffs from the sleeve, but almost all of them are located on the runout grooves with the playback area being for the most part completely clean. The Near Mint labels are very clean and are completely scuff- and wear-free. The vinyl plays great having a punchy and vivid sound.
