Description

The Beatles - Something New

I am pleased to offer for sale this superb 1964 UK export 1st pressing of the Beatles fifth US-released album, Something New.

Something New was essentially 'A Hard Days Night' repackaged for the American market. The album features 8 songs off the UK release, two from the 'Long Tall Sally' EP, "Slow Down and "Matchbox" and, oddly, the German language version of "I want to Hold Your Hand". The album is unique amongst Capitol releases of early Beatles records in that it features a genuine stereo mix for all 11 tracks - and it sounds great for it! Listen to a complete audio recording of this record below.

Something New was the first of four Capitol releases to be marketed by EMI in export markets - specifically for American military personnel stationed in Europe. Rather than being on the rainbow Capitol label, export editions, such as the record being sold in this listing, were distributed on the sought-after yellow and black Parlophone label with catalogue numbers CPCS.

Album Details:

Serial number: CPCS 101

Matrix number: YEEX 7 - B12 / YEEX 8 B-12

(The original US matrix number, ST 2451, is scratched out on the side 2 run out).

Stamper codes: 1 P / 1 O

Tax Codes: N/A

Vinyl Weight: 141g

The matrix numbers confirm that the record is a true UK first pressing. The mother & stamper codes communicate that the record was produced extremely early in the production run. Consequently, the audio reproduction is fantastic. Take a listen yourself below!

The labels are the second variant as is evident from the absence of "Sold in U.K.." text and the presence of "The Gramophone Co. ..." perimeter text to both labels.

This copy comes with the first variant front-side laminated, tri-flipback Garrod and Lofthouse sleeve with mid-sized 'stereo' aural indicator present to the front side.

The album is complete with the original EMItex 'protect your records' polythene lined, die-cut inner sleeve.

Condition Report:

The condition report provided below is given as a guide only. I include high-quality, comprehensive photographs as well as a complete audio recording in my listings to enable you to make an informed decision on the condition of this record yourself.

Disc: EXCELLENT -

Labels: EXCELLENT -

The labels are clean and retain rich, vibrant colours. A collection of dull spindle trails can be seen around each centre hole.

Visual: VERY GOOD +

Both vinyl playing surfaces retain a superb deep gloss shine. In bright daylight a small fingernail scuff can be seen to side 1 in addition to a number of light surface marks which are present to both sides. Underneath the glare of a halogen desk lamp a handful of insignificant wispy paper hairlines can be seen alongside an iridescent rainbow shine.

Sound Quality: EXCELLENT

Please note: the eBay app does not facilitate playback. Please use the internet site to enjoy the audio clips.

Side 1:

Side 2:

As can be heard in the recordings, the record sounds fantastic. The audio is bright and clean without any hint of groove wear distortion. It is quiet throughout both of the lead-ins, as well during the dead-wax between tracks. The German version of "I Want To Hold Your Hand" an interesting novelty at the end of side 2. An enjoyable listen.

Sleeve: EXCELLENT +

The original sleeve is in fantastic condition. Both the front and rear are clean and bright. The cover art maintains vibrant colouration. The rear is remarkably white. The corners are crisp without any softening. The flip-backs are attached and without physical damage but do show three small areas of discolouration. The spine and all edges are without wear. It would be very difficult to find a better example.

Inner Sleeve: EXCELLENT

The original inner sleeve is in great condition. It is very clean and displays only mild creasing.

Additional Details:

Before the audio test, the vinyl was cleaned first by an Okki Nokki vacuum cleaner and then an Audio Desk ultrasonic cleaner.

After cleaning, the vinyl was placed inside a brand new mobile fidelity anti-static inner sleeve.

The vinyl will be packaged outside of the sleeve, both of which are stored inside an archival quality polypropylene outer sleeve.

The record will be sent via an insured courier in a padded vinyl mailer.
