(Capitol ST-2080 – STEREO)

EARLY 1964 REVISED PRESSING

COVER: EAST COAST PRESSING with No # on back.

RECORD:  Rare EAST COAST PRESSING with “IAM Pyramid” in trail-off area.

LABELS: Rare EAST COAST PRESSING with “I CALL YOU NAME” ERROR on Side Two. 

You’re looking at “THE BEATLES’ SECOND ALBUM” with RARE “I CALL YOU NAME” ERROR on Side Two. This is a nice STEREO copy of this great 60 YEAR OLD ALBUM.  According to Stanley Panenka’s great book “INTRODUCING THE BEATLES RECORD PRICE GUIDE,” the exact same pressing in NEAR MINT condition is valued at $800.00! 

(Because of the record’s scarcity, it’s valued at 70% of the total price. The cover is more common, so it’s value is only 30% of the total price.)

There are 2 important factors pertaining to the scarcity and value of this particular version of the album.  They are: 

#1) “I CALL YOU NAME” ERROR – Capitol discovered the typo right after its release and quickly had corrected labels printed and sent out to the appropriate Pressing Plants to replace the incorrect ones on future pressings. That's why copies of this particular pressing are not so easy to come by.

#2) MONO VS. STEREO – Stereo copies of Beatles albums manufactured prior to 1966 are significantly RARER than their Mono counterparts.  It is estimated that only about FIFTEEN PERCENT of Capitol's Beatles albums manufactured prior to 1966 were Stereo. (That’s 6 2/3 Mono pressings for every 1 Stereo pressing.) There are no Mono copies of this particular version. It only came out in Stereo.    

ALBUM CONDITIONS

ALBUM COVER:  (VG-)

Front: The front cover still looks pretty good. There is some ring wear, but it’s not too obvious. All four corners have dings.   (SEE IMAGES.)

TAPING  I’ve taped the spine and bottom seam along their entire length. This was done very carefully with acid-free tape that is hard to detect without putting the cover right under a lamp.

Back: (No # near RIAA symbol. The “Stereo Damage” warning IS at the bottom.) The back cover has some ring wear, some discoloration near the edges, some tearing on the bottom right corner that I repaired with the Acid Free tape.  (SEE IMAGES.)

Seams: As mentioned before, the bottom seam has been taped along its entire length. The top seam has a 3/4 inch split at the open end.   

Open Edge: The two corners have those dings and the above mentioned split.   (SEE IMAGES.) 

Spine: The spine was completely gone, so I taped it the entire length.  

VINYL RECORD:  (Looks VG -– Sounds VG+)  

Record: Play tested.  No skips. Obviously been well played, but still looks pretty good despite the multiple surface scuffs and some barely feelable scratches. I listened to the entire album with headphones and it sounds great with only minimal surface noise which does not affect its play.  (SEE IMAGES.) 

Labels: Both labels look great with only some very light spindle marks.  (SEE IMAGES.) 

Sleeve: Comes with original East Coast LIGHT BLUE Capitol sleeve (12TC-1) in pretty good condition with side split about halfway and about a 3 inch split at the bottom center. (The record will be shipped inside a new generic sleeve in order to protect the original sleeve.)

RECORD GRADING CODES FLAWS & IMPERFECTIONS ON RECORD: Paper or jacket rubs, light surface scuffs, scratches, minimal surface noise, pops & clicks, extraneous sounds, most of its luster, deep scratches, label imperfections and spindle marks.

(MINT)  – A perfect record. This grade is only used in the rare instance that a record looks absolutely perfect.

(NEAR MINT) – Near perfect. At worst, a few paper rubs--nothing that would ever affect playback.  Vinyl is near perfect. Bright and shiny. At most, a light scuff appears on the record, but it should play without any noise or skips. Both labels look fantastic with only a few tiny spindle marks. 

(VG++)  – (Worth 75% of NM value.) Has some very light markings that have no significant impact during playback. Still retains most of it’s original luster. Not quite good enough for Near Mint, but close.  Vinyl should play with no skips of any kind. One label may be slightly off-center and have unobtrusive initials or a name.

(VG+) – (Worth 50% of NM value.) A few scuffs/light scratches. Plays/looks real nice minimal surface noise. Still a good amount of luster. One label may be slightly off-center w/unobtrusive initials or a name. 

(VG) – (Worth 25% of NM value.) Has mild surface wear--some markings and light scratches. There is some light surface noise, but its overall impact while playing is minimal.  Vinyl looks well-played, but still sounds pretty good. – The labels may have writing or stickers.

(VG–) – (Worth 15% of NM value.) Vinyl well played and looks it. Will have substantial surface noise, pops and clicks, but sounds should not dominate during playback. Surface marks will be apparent and some deeper scratches are possible, but record should still play without skipping.

COVER GRADING CODES FLAWS & IMPERFECTIONS:  COVER SLICK – LAMINATED – Ring wear – corner wear or dings – wrinkles/crinkles or flaking along spine – creases – seam splits - yellowing from aging - discoloring – tears, chips, dents or nicks on the seams or spine - stains or discoloration - mold or mildew spots - stickers or labels –  sticker residue – peel-off marks – water damage – cut out holes or corners – bar codes –

(MINT) – A cover that looks like it has not been held. Four sharp corners, no visible blemishes and cover slick is properly centered over back liner.

(NM) – Cover should be near perfect with only minor signs of wear, maybe one bumped corner. Should be no ring wear. Cover may be slightly off-center. 

(VG++) – A cover that has been handled properly, with minor wear, but nothing distracting.  One or two corners may have “bumps”. Some minor ring wear may be just starting to show. Also, there can be some minor creases in the corners but no splits in the seams.

(VG+) – Only minor blemishes. Partial ring wear just starting to show. 1 or 2 corners may have bumps & 1 or 2 seams may be split no more than 1/2 inch.

(VG) – Cover shows distinct wear from handing. There may be ring wear, minor discoloring, edge and spine wear and one or two seam splits measuring no more than 2 inches.  There will be noticeable ring wear, but the cover should, for the most part, still be in good condition.

(VG-)  Cover has some damage, but still intact and still able to hold the record. There may be seam splitting, but not complete separation. Ring wear may be heavy. May also have some stains, tears and writing on it.   Fair/Poor – Cover is falling apart, torn, and has writing all over it.
