Description

The Beatles, Rubber Soul: Mono PMC 1267.
This is an original UK second pressing released in 1965 on the Parlophone record label.
Rubber Soul, often dubbed 'The Pot Album', was The Beatles first album with psychedelic hints, inspiring many of the late 60s musicians to start making music and introducing the sitar to western music in 'Norweigan Wood'.
The second pressing came very soon after the album was released as John was unhappy with the sound quality of the so called 'loud cut' first pressing and asked for it to be repressed. He was finally happy with the fourth attempt (hence the -4/-4 matrix numbers) and it got pressed.
Consequently, the second press is widely regarded as having superior sound quality to the first press and is therefore the preferred record of choice for audiophiles.
This is a staple record for any vinyl collection and this is a great copy of it to own!

There are several features unique to this pressing:

  • Extremely rare Ernest J Day & Co. flipback sleeve;
  • EMI 'protect your records' lined inner sleeve; and
  • XEX 579-4 & XEX 580-4 matrix numbers.
  • Black labels with a Yellow Parlophone logo, and with:
  • "Sold in U.K. ..." text below the Parlophone logo,
  • "The Gramophone co. ..." text printed around the perimeter; and
  • ?1965 publishers credit.

EMI utilised both Garrod & Lofthouse and E J Day to produce sleeves for Beatles records.
Although E J Day produced the majority of sleeves for early Beatles records such as Please Please Me, Garrod & Lofthouse quickly took over as the main producer.
By the time Rubber Soul came out, E J Day weren't making many Beatles sleeves at all.
It is therefore extremely rare to find an Early pressing of rubber soul in an original E J Day sleeve, especially one in good condition.
To make this sleeve even rarer, it is one of the earliest sleeves printed. A loose thread can be seen on John Lennon's jacket on the front cover which was airbrushed out of later copies.

The condition of the album is as follows:

Sleeve: Very Good +

The original Ernest J Day & CO. flipback sleeve looks great.
The front retains the original gloss sheen with bright colours.
Unlike the majority of these records the laminate covering is without any bubbles, ripples, or blemishes of any kind.
The corners and spine show subtle signs of storage wear but nothing out of the ordinary.
The rear is clean with just a few small stains.
The flipbacks are in great condition; they are very clean and are without any folds or creases.

Inner Sleeve: Very Good +

Original off-white 'protect your records' lined EMI inner sleeve.
 Very clean with minimal discolouration.
In addition, an audiophile quality, anti-static inner sleeve is provided which the record is stored in (see last picture).

Disc: Very Good +
Rubber Soul is a fantastic album to listen to and this copy sounds great.
Both sides retain the original mirror like finish.
Side 1 has a few surface marks which you can pick up in the light but none of which affect playback.
The audio of Side 1 is more accurately graded as excellent, extremely clear with very little background noise, crisp vocals and punchy instrumentals.
Side 2 is not quite as crisp with a subtle but noticeable background crackle.
It does not distract from the listening experience and tracks like 'In My Life' still sound great.
The labels are both clean with no writing or stains and with minimal spindle wear.

Overall a really nice copy of an original 60s pressing! A great addition to any collection.
