Description

In this auction:

  • HELP! Original Motion Picture Soundtrack” LP by The Beatles

  • This LP is Capitol Records MAS - 2386.

  • This is a MONAURAL (MONO) PRESSING.

  • This LP was issued in 1965.

  • The vinyl was pressed at Capitol’s Los Angeles Plant, because there is an asterisk (*), the ID symbol for Capitol’s LA pressings, in the trail-off vinyl on both sides.

  • This is a RARE WEST COAST PRESSING. It is identified by the following:

      1. The song “HELP!” on Side 1 is printed ABOVE the spindle hole. (According to Cox & Daniels, this has ONLY been confirmed on west coast mono and stereo pressings.)

      2. This label variation DOES NOT LIST “You Can’t Do That” as part of track 4 on side 2.

      3. And, according to Perry Cox & Frank Daniels, “This rare revised label lists Ken Thorne as the writer of the last track on each side.”

  • HOWEVER, the “HELP!” west coast pressing in this auction is an UNDOCUMENTED LABEL VARIATION because:

      1. The Cox & Daniels’ Price Guide for the Beatles American Records, 6th Edition states Ken Thorne is printed as “the writer of the last track on each side”. But while the Side 1 label of the LP in this auction DOES have the Ken Thorne credit on the last track (“In The Tyrol”), the Side 2 label DOES NOT have the Ken Thorne credit on the last track (“The Chase”). This difference can be compared to the Side 2 image of the west coast MONO pressing on page 121 of the Price Guide for the Beatles American Records, 6th Edition. (I had considered including that image from page 121, but was concerned about a potential copyright infringement by doing so even if I acknowledged credit for it.)

      2. FURTHERMORE, the Side 2 image of the west coast MONO pressing on page 121 of the Price Guide for the Beatles American Records, 6th Edition has Ken Thorne printed as the writer of track 4 on Side 2 “The Bitter End”. The Side 2 label of the record in this auction OMITS the Ken Thorne credit on that track.

  • I understand that Bruce Spizer’s Beatles on Capitol Records book DOES NOT LIST any “HELP!” LP label variations with the song “Help!” (nor any songs) above the spindle hole.

  • The COVER is in VERY STRONG VG+ to NEAR MINT MINUS CONDITION with extremely light overall wear. The cover is NICE and WHITE without any soiling. (Due to the primarily white cover, it is really tough to find this LP cover in this VERY NICE and CLEAN CONDITION.)

  • The VINYL is in VERY STRONG VG to VG+ CONDITION with some very light surface hairlines/scuffs (none “feel-able”) and LOTS of GLOSS.

  • It comes with its original olive-green Capitol inner sleeve that is the correct Capitol Records inner paper sleeve for this “HELP!” MONO issue. The inner sleeve is nice and clean with no splits, no folds and no creases.

  • The MONO pressing of “HELP!” has become more desirable and harder to find these days in decent condition.

  • I bought this LP (when I was living in LA) from a record store named Soundsations located in Westchester, CA near LAX on February, 18, 1992. (I had kept the receipt with the LP.)

THIS IS SIMPLY a GREAT COPY of this BEATLES “HELP!” MONO LP with an UNDOCUMENTED LABEL VARIATION that will be a NOTABLE ADDITION to someone’s Beatles’ vinyl collection!

Thanks to the Price Guide for the Beatles American Records, 6th Ed. by Perry Cox and Frank Daniels for some information about this LP.
