Description
The Beatles - A Hard Day’s Night - stereo vinyl lp
Matrix numbers: YEX 126-1 and YEX 127-2
Stamper numbers: 2 MA and 1 AH
Research reveals that this pressing dates from 1968 when EMI re-cut Side 2 with a new matrix number, but immediately withdrew it because of an error at the very beginning of ‘Anytime At All’ - the snare drum crack is very slightly shortened. Hard to describe, but if you know the track well, the difference is really obvious. EMI reverted to the -1 matrix number for the rest of the pressing run. Every reported version of this particular cut has the 1 AH stamper on Side 2, indicating how few copies there actually are in circulation. However, I haven’t been able to locate a listing on Discogs for this cut, so there are presumably very few out there.
In addition to the above rarity, this disc also features one of the label typos from that period, on Side 1: ‘I Should Have KNOW Better’.
I trust that all of the above information is accurate, but if you know better (!), please let me know..
The following description uses the Goldmine gradings. Please examine the photographs.
The cover is easily excellent+, with negligible shelf-wear and no markings or serious creases.
The inner sleeve is excellent, with only one partial 2cm seam split along one side.
The vinyl must also be described as excellent: whilst there are some scuffs and light hairlines, they cannot be felt and do not directly affect playback. A complete playtest revealed the sound to be crisp and punchy, as you would expect: a really enjoyable stereo pressing of this magnificent album. There is the very occasional negligible pop and light surface crackle between some tracks. I did detect a faint repeat pop (three times?) on ‘I’ll Cry Instead’.
Disc will be housed in a poly-lined sleeve for extra protection.
