Baron Elmo proudly presents a veritable treasure trove of avant-garde 20th Century sounds, captured on vinyl for your listening astonishment: Music From Mills, a triple lp honoring Mills College at its 100th anniversary, released back in 1986 by the College itself, now long unavailable. The Mills Center for Contemporary Music has a worldwide reputation for supporting great experimental composers, as its long list of noteworthy graduates and faculty will bear out. These three records feature a plethora of amazing pieces – mostly unavailable elsewhere – by an impressive roster of Mills teachers and alumni. Highlights include rare works from Robert Ashley (an otherwise unavailable excerpt from his opera Atalanta), Steve Reich ("Melodica," the third, last and rarest of Steve's early tape manipulation pieces, done after "Come Out," and "It's Gonna Rain"), Pandit Pran Nath (mentor to LaMonte Young, who wrote liner notes for this performance), and Anthony Gnazzo (a collage of deconstructed drum tracks). An insert with extremely thorough liner notes for each piece and composer is included. The lps are nicely packed in a handsome sleeve with cover art by Jasper Johns. This, gentle reader, is one amazing musical document that will make for many stimulating hours of contemplation. Except for the pieces by Brubeck, Behrman, Oliveros and Subotnick, all of the music is exclusive to these three records. And no, this set was never released on CD. This copy is sealed and mint.
