Rarely-seen DMM audiophile vinyl issue of this album which documents the results of Riley's trip to China on the occasion of In C's 25th anniversary, realizing a version of his minimalist classic performed by an ensemble of Chinese traditional instruments. Riley worked closely with the Shanghai Film Orchestra and conductor Wang Yongji, in the process revising the piece somewhat in order to fit the ensemble and yielding a recording that is very different from the original 60s version (including some interesting scale translations necessitated by the folk instruments); instrumentation includes various lutes, zithers, mouth organs, flutes, and percussion. The final tapes had to be smuggled out of China, and in the US it was mixed by Brian Eno, Jon Hassell, and Riley. No less interesting are the accompanying compositions by Chinese-American composer Liang, incorporating experimental techniques applied to traditional Chinese instruments such as bending the pitch of gongs by dipping them in water. With notes by John Schaefer of the NPR show New Sounds.

artist info from album notes:
Terry Riley was influenced by John Coltrane and John Cage, pioneered realtime tape-delay feedback systems, collaborated with Pandit Pran Nath and John Cale of the Velvet Underground, and is associated with the late 20th century 'minimalism' movement along with Philip Glass, classmate La Monte Young, John Adams, Steve Reich, Charlemagne Palestine, Phil Niblock, and Tony Conrad. Eno studied under Christian Wolff and George Brecht, was influenced by Steve Reich and Erik Satie, and has worked as producer, composer, and performer with La Monte Young, Cornelius Cardew, Roxy Music, Robert Fripp, Cluster, Jon Hassell, David Bowie, Talking Heads, David Byrne, Daniel Lanois, U2, John Cale, Derek Jarman, Jah Wobble, Nico, Robert Wyatt, and Laurie Anderson. Hassell studied under Karlheinz Stockhausen and Pandit Pran Nath, and worked with La Monte Young, Terry Riley, Brian Eno, Talking Heads, David Sylvian, and Peter Gabriel.
