KATSUHIRO TSUBONOH - IRON SYMPHONY / CROSS LINK FOR PERCUSSIONS / JYUKON /
METAMORPHOSIS OF PAPER / THE PSALMS OF WATER - 2LP - King Records - 1980 - Japan
I'll accept trades for this one. Serious proposals only.
Outrageously rare 2LP from very unknown (in occident) composer Katsuhiro Tsubonoh.
The other appearances I know are on from LP "Michio Kai Plays Avant-Garde Flute Pieces" (ALM Records, 1971) and from "Music Now for Harp" LP with Takehisa Kosugi and Toru Takemitsu.
This is an incredible record of fluxus like compositions.
Side A
"Jyukon" (in 3 parts) is a systemic "hoketus" composition for wooden percussions.
The piece starts with cricket like sounds and develops toward a fast and complex polyrhythmy somewhere between Gamelan music, Steve Reich's "Music for Mallet Instruments", Japanese Kabuki, flying insects, and Pierre Favre "Abanaba".
Hand-made delays, mouth effects, phase patterns, suspensions, …
Gorgeous!
Side B
"Metamorphosis of paper" is, hence the title, for paper only.
Paper hammered tubes, torn paper, shaken paper, and so on.
Think about "Water Music" by Josef Anton Riedl and "Concierto Para Papel" by Taller De Musica Mundana (LLorenç Barber) and you'll get an idea.
Pure abstract "natural" concrete music.
"The Psalms of Water" is for water only.
Water drops, water flow, water bubbling, underwater sounds, and so on.
Tsubonoh's use of microphones makes it nearly an electroacoustic piece without the need of any electronic.
Very different though from Takemitsu's "Water Music".
Stunning!
Side C
"Iron Symphony" is for metal instruments only.
Chains, gongs, bells, steel drums, furnitures, metal sheets, celesta and so on.
Another brilliant work here structured as a landscape for psychonauts.
Delicate and discreet moments alternate with stormy events, cold moon deserts with sunny forests.
Pure beauty!
Side D
"Cross Link" (a suite in 7 different parts) resonates to me like Mauricio Kagel's music (think "Stadt Theater" or "Acustica" ).
Starts with quiet and spare acousmatic sounds and voices.
A cello with a pvc bow ? A slow laughing dog harmonica ? Baschet instruments ?
The humouristic intro melts into a celestial and dreamy crystal bowed atmosphere leading toward a more anxious metallic moment reminding Robert Rutman's Steel Cello Ensemble.
Another part is a clownesque rythm from stretched skins and voices (well... not sure actually).
Very bizarre and again very Kagel!
Then a meowing saw merges with a female voice to end with articulated vocalism vs avorted brass sounds.
Rare as hen's teeth.
FANTASTIC LP!!!
AWESOME!

GRADING :
M (MINT)
Sealed, never played, new in its original packaging.
NM (NEAR MINT)
Almost perfect copy, never or very rarely played. At worst, one or two surface marks, generally insignificant and due to inner sleeve. This the highest grade for an unsealed record.
EX (EXCELLENT)
Very clean copy, some insignificant surfaces marks (hairlines). This record has been rarely played, on good equipment and treated with care. The cover has very minor flaws: a name or discrete initials, low wear corners, very slight ringwear.
VG + + (VERY GOOD + +)
More surface marks.Minor flaws or cover wear, minor edge wear. This is generally the grade given to a 20 to 50 years old record with a "normal" life, treated with care, but listened and handled regularly by his former owner.
VG + (VERY GOOD +)
Has been played a lot, shows multiple slight surface marks (hairlines) generating background noise between songs but no jump or skips. Cover shows important signs of age and storage (slice corners worn, name, date, dedication, tears, etc. ...). Generally, this record was one of the favorites among previous owner discotheque , went from hand to hand, had to animate some parties and bears the scars of a busy life.
VG (VERY GOOD)
The record is very worn, has been played a lot, shows important scratches that are creating permanent background noises but do not skip or jump. Still listenable (especially at high volume for big sound). The cover is well worn, torn important corner and edge wear, significant traces of marker pen or ... well, the previous grade but more accentuated.
G (GOOD)
Has been played to the hilt (but still playable on some titles), many scratches, crackles a lot while playing, may have jumps or sticks. The cover is very damaged. This record must be very rare to be proposed on sale !
