Label/Format: Island – Original pink format with the orange eyeball logo. These are deeply textured with the deep ring ridge.

Label Conditions: Both look superb. In terms of wear and ageing, well barely anything at all. These first press labels look fantastic with the most beautiful shade of real pastel-pink. Any spindle marks are ultra fine, very few and faint and without doubt, this first issue has been played little.

Cat Number: ILPS 9097.

Mode / Speed: Stereo / 33.3 rpm.

Warps: Assume all records I offer have no warping of any significance and all tracking is easy and effortless and should play on all turntables and even ‘budget’ decks.

Weight of this Record: 160 grams. A very impressive weight for this very thick press Island first issue.

Country of Manufacture: England.

Rarity: Rare: a poor selling album and first pressings are elusive and seldom seen, especially with a record this clean. The Island label in 1969 was available in three distinct formats and even variants on them too. This was one of the last albums issued on the orange eyeball label. Some new albums and repressings were pressed on the pink block label and then along came with more familiar pink i format (textured and smooth). This first issue would have had a fairly limited run and remains one of the more elusive albums within the Island catalogue.

Original Year of Release: 1969.

Matrix Nos: ILPS + 9097 + A / ILPS + 9097 + B

Brief Info: This third Traffic album was somewhat hasily put together as to mark the end of their Island contract – ironically, this did not happen and the band went on to make several more great albums on the same label. The first side is studio material and includes two classic singles and a B-side. Side two was recorded live at The Fillmore West which includes two lengthy tracks. This was a commercial non-starter and no early copy is easy to find. A title I have seldom seen on vinyl at all and to find such a lovely first pressing came as a real surprise. The cover is incredibly prone to wear and I have yet to see one that has escaped. Any wear to this one is on the edges but the main face areas look quite impressive. The record itself looks very modestly played with any surface marks few, light and faint and the labels are gorgeous. One tiny mark on the start of side two has a few light clicks on the very quite intro, these soon go as the music really gets going. A small blemish on what is still a lovely record. One of the tiny few of these I have ever seen, this has always been an elusive album as a first pressing.

Cover’s Potential for Wear: High: all the ingredients again for rubbing and ringwear and this will seldom be seen devoid of some issues.

Cover Grade and Format: EXCELLENT(-): mostly marked down because of edge and corner rubs. An unlaminated gatefold format with matt, smooth surfaces. Printed and made in England by Ernest J. Day. The inside gatefold is constructed the correct way up – this worthy of mention because I have seen a couple in the past with this area upside-down.

Cover Front: One of the best fronts I have seen on this album, any rubbing is light on the main area. However there is some rubbing on the edges: one on the spine and mostly on the bottom corners. Few marks and barely any creasing, this front also retains deep rich colour.

Cover Back: Somewhat against the odds, the back looks even better with minimal wear. The faintest trace of a rim rub near the top edge and any edge rubbing very light indeed.

Cover Inner Gatefold: Little short of as made and very attractive indeed.

Top Edges: Around moderate rubbing which is a little patchy.

Bottom Edges: Almost the same as above.

Right Edge(s), and Type: Both in very fine condition: sharp and very neat with little wear at all. Minimal thickening and almost burr-free, both are guaranteed untrimmed. Record enters on the back edge.

Spine and Text: The spine has a moderate rub on the bottom corner and one to the top fold area just below centre. But still solid and straight and the good news is, all the text is present with barely any wear at all. The aforementioned rubbing has missed all the text, so that is a bonus. In fact, in text terms, this is probably the best I have seen. But the rubbing will no please the more discerning collector and this can be seen on my pictures.

Corners: All have moderate rubbing and the bottom left a little rounded. The others retain fine shape overall.

Cover Summary: One day, a near ‘perfect’ example of this rare and challenging cover will show up, but I cannot hold my breath that long. In real terms, this original example is very respectable, in fact the main areas are still very attractive. This cover does seem incredibly prone to edge rubbing and I have yet to see one that has escaped. But with the spine text intact, I consider that a real bonus. No for the highly discerning, but many will enjoy it.

The Inner Sleeve: EXCELLENT: a plain white unlined inner in very fine condition. Clean and little aged with any creasing light. All edges unsplit with no repairs.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: EXCELLENT: this being quite critical, but as it has a tiny mark at the very beginning of side two that emits a few light clicks, this I feel is more than fair. A very fine visual copy that is very clean with fine shine, intense black and very heavily pressed. A copy with very modest plays on all the evidence with any surface marks few, light and faint. Just the minor blemish at the edge of side two the only issue for the very discerning collector. The clicks are brief and when the music really gets going disappear. Visually an impressive first pressed record that should please many collectors.

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippets or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing B&W speakers that include the legendary tweeter from their awesome Nautilus range that reveals every blemish or minuscule sound present on any record.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: This elusive and quite rare first issue Island record mostly plays above it’s high visual grading with little to fault other than the fairly brief light clicks mentioned above. In fact most-all of this record exceeds it’s fine good looks. Strong, distortion-free sound, all frequencies are sharp and clear - sound quality is high with a wide dynamic range and very detailed sound on side one. Side two is live and, does have some very quiet passages, but other than the intro, plays very impressively indeed. Minimal surface sounds and very well pressed – that not to be dismissed lightly. Overall an exceptional clean pressing for a fairly difficult album, and Island records often vary in pressing quality. Few genuine originals will outperform this one significantly I feel sure. Both channels are clean and sharp, I feel very sure this record has been played very little and offers very enjoyable sound (unless total perfection is non-negotiable), that from a record of great age and difficult, a big ask. Very little spoilt my pleasure when play-grading this rare Traffic album, for me, their most elusive on vinyl – and by a distance. This copy will still prove challenging to find significantly better and can be highly recommended for Traffic and Island collectors. There issues with the cover and less-so on the record, but it still sets a high standard and those labels look fantastic.

SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT necessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
