Description

TONY RANDALL (1960) The IMPERIAL ALBUM "BITS & PIECES"   Tony Randall was not thought of as a singer by his movie fans (nor by himself for that matter), but here, in a very entertaining, if little known album, he actually sings two of the songs straight (POOR LITTLE RICH GIRL and JUST A GIGOLO).  (Prior to this he was well represented in a singing role in the Original Broadway Cast Album of "OH! CAPTAIN").   This IMPERIAL album was recorded in New York City over a period of 3 days in August, 1959, under the supervision of Henri Rene.  Bernard Green, the composer of the "Mr.Peeper's" Show, and for three and a half years, with "The Sid Caesar Show", arranged and conducted all the music on this entertaining LP.   On one track ("BABY IT'S COLD OUTSIDE") Tony is joined by JOYCE JAMESON, a then featured performer in TV, on Stage and in Motion Pictures.  She was a high point of any of the JACK PAAR Shows she regularly appeared on.  On Broadway, she was featured in  the late fifties BILLY BARNES REVUE.   This eclectic collection includes songs, "commercials", a "stereo demonstration", a fairly correct old singing commercial called "The Prince George Hotel". There are four "lagniappe" tracks, meaning somethng thrown in gratis.  Each is a brief comedy bit by Tony, such as "the cigarette commercial".  (Randall is known to have hated smoking).   Tony Randall's career began on the stage, then to television and the movies (all successfully) and back to the stage again.  His one musical on Broadway was "OH,CAPTAIN!" ion which he acquitted himself with style. The show AND the score were better than the short run would seem to indicate.   The LP is on IMPERIAL Records, number LP 9090.  The vinyl has some superficial rub marks but is in otherwise fine condition. The cover has been taped at the top eight seam, and has some rub marks  as well, but as per the picture, looks fine too.     This is a superb album of its kind, and a greatly entertaining one, not to be taken too seriously.  (His version of the Harold Rome title song "FANNY" has to be heard to be believed!)   SIDE 1:   LAUGH, CLOWN, LAUGH NATURE BOY LAGNIAPPE (THE PRODUCER) POOR LITTLE RICH GIRL ALL NIGHT D.J.
