TONY JOE WHITE – Black And White. Monument SLP 18114. SEALED NEW VINYL RECORD ALBUM. Originally issued in 1969 on Monument Records. This a straight reissue edition issued circa 2020. My invoice says 180g vinyl, no hype sticker.

DESCRIPTION:             

Black And White was the first album released by Tony Joe White. It contained the single Polk Salad Annie which was also recorded by Elvis Presley in 1970 and became a staple of his live shows in the 1970s. It was recorded at RCA Victor Studios, Nashville and produced by Billy Swan.

"Polk Salad Annie"'s lyrics describe the lifestyle of a generic poor Southern girl. Traditionally, this is a derivation of the term that describes a type of food; "poke salad," a leafy spinach type plant, cheap to eat and better than nothin’ if you were poor; as well as becoming an inside joke with the band as to the financial success of a gig:  Looks like a “poke salad” night again. Because of the popularity of the song it most often appears in print as “polk salad.” The 1968 single release peaked at #8 on the Billboard Hot 100, but not until 9 months later in July of 1969. And a new style was born/coined, “swamp rock.”

Tony Joe White’s roots lie in the swamplands of Oak Grove, Louisiana, where he was born in 1943. Situated just west of the Mississippi River, it's a land of cottonfields, where polk salad grows wild and alligators lurk in moss-covered swamps. "I spent the first 18 years of my life down there," said White "My folks raised cotton and corn. There were lotsa times when there weren't too much to eat, and I ain't ashamed to admit that we've often whipped up a mess of poke salad." As a child he listened not only to local bluesmen and countrysingers but also to the Cajun music of Louisiana, that rare hybrid of traditional musical styles introduced by French settlers at the turn of the century.

All LPs are removed from their jackets and placed outside of the jacket for shipping. If an album comes sealed (and will be noted as such in the above description), it will be shipped whole unless you request that I open it up to place the disc outside of the jacket for shipping. Both jacket and disc are placed inside of an outer plastic sleeve before packing for shipping. I use professional corrugated record mailers with inside packing.

MIX:  This sometimes appears in my title line and refers to a group's/artist's music having a mix of styles such a rock track with jazz then followed by a straight rock track followed by a psych rock track, etc., as opposed to a blues album with the album's tracks having predominantly one style.
