TIMOTHY LEARY Turn On, Tune In, Drop Out Orig LSD Sealed

1966/USA/ ESP - Disk 1027….. here’s an original Sealed copy of this rare lp. There is a delete hole bottom left corner, the top right edge on the back has a crease that starts approx 1” down on the spine edge and runs up and across a bit, the rear left has two heavier creases, one crease starts to run approx 4” at the top seam and runs down a bit toward the opening, there is another shorter crease approx 1” away from the other and there is a small light crease between the two. The bottom right rear by the delete hole has three smaller creases.  These creases show more as light bends on the front cover, there is slight bin wear on the shrink, the corners have been bumped and the spine has a minor crush spot, there is a ¼” tear in the shrink at the opening and there is minor aging there, otherwise it’s a clean flat Sealed original copy!  There is some glare and shadows on the pictures due to the camera flash. A very nice addition to your collection! Please check my auctions for other rock, psych, folk, and various other lp’s, good luck and thanks for looking!

"Turn on, tune in, drop out" is a counterculture phrase coined by Timothy Leary in the 1960s. The phrase came to him in the shower one day after Marshall McLuhan suggested to Leary that he come up with "something snappy" to promote the benefits of LSD, It is an excerpt from a prepared speech he delivered at the opening of a press conference in New York City on September 19, 1966. This phrase urged people to embrace cultural changes through the use of psychedelics and by detaching themselves from the existing conventions and hierarchies in society. The phrase was derided by more conservative critics.

The phrase is derived from this part of Leary's speech:

Like every great religion of the past we seek to find the divinity within and to express this revelation in a life of glorification and the worship of God. These ancient goals we define in the metaphor of the present — turn on, tune in, drop out.

Leary later explained in his 1983 autobiography Flashbacks:

'Turn on' meant go within to activate your neural and genetic equipment. Become sensitive to the many and various levels of consciousness and the specific triggers that engage them. Drugs were one way to accomplish this end. 'Tune in' meant interact harmoniously with the world around you - externalize, materialize, express your new internal perspectives. 'Drop out' suggested an elective, selective, graceful process of detachment from involuntary or unconscious commitments. 'Drop Out' meant self-reliance, a discovery of one's singularity, a commitment to mobility, choice, and change. Unhappily my explanations of this sequence of personal development were often misinterpreted to mean 'Get stoned and abandon all constructive activity'.

///GRADING///

MINT: as stated with no defects

M- OR NEAR MINT: as stated near Mint!, or Mint Minus, same thing, very clean with no defect to sound or visual appearance, one scuff or mark may be permitted but it will be mentioned in the description, a near Mint record looks and plays very clean

EXCELLENT: not much below near Mint, may have a delete hole and/or a minor defect or two not visually detracting from the cover, the vinyl will appear shiny and in clean condition with very minor defects not affecting the sound, still very clean and very collectable!

VG++ still a very nice copy with minimal cover wear and/or delete/splits, still visually appealing, the vinyl will retain it's original gloss and can have some minor scuffs/scratches that don't affect play very much

VG+ a little more cover/ring wear and delete, splits etc., the vinyl will still retain much original gloss with a bit more scuffs and/or scratches I may list a very rare or desirable item with a lower grade, I will try to list all defects, both cover and vinyl no matter the condition, I also play grade the records on high end equipment and will give an honest play grade as well as visual grade, considering the number of records I buy on line my grading is very conservative and fair.
