Though they would later improve their formula and their blend of a number of Eastern musical styles into a psychedelic context would be co-opted by a number of other groups over the next 40+ years, Alchemy remains a must-hear for fans of the way-out.Opener "Mosaic" pits recorder versus violin in a free-jazz style duel backed by a tribal drumbeat, immediately establishing the very heady mood this album operates in. The longest and best track, "Ghetto Raga," opens in a bath of strings and woodwind before settling into a repetitive rhythm that allows the lead musicians to wail away, painting a sonic canvas that's both enveloping and mind-expanding. The other highlight of the A-side is "Stone Circle," which is a more playful take on the formula established on the first two tracks.
Side B opens a fair deal darker with "Egyptian Book of the Dead," a track with as much sense of grim foreboding as the title implies. Here the drumbeat is much more insistent, almost menacing, while the woodwinds linger over the staccato'd strings with more than a hint of melancholy. "Area Three" incorporates Jew's harp (from John Peel!) into the core musicians' mournful lament, but "Dragon Lines" lightens the mood a bit before "Lark Rise," another highlight that almost brings to mind Steeleye Span at their most Renaissance-Faire-y.
While it does bear some resemblance to the ethno-jazz of the period and some of the weirder psych-jazz-fusion groups like Soft Machine, nothing else released during the time period has the same field recording sense of discovery as this record. It wouldn't be until at least Masstishaddhu that something else this ritualistic and warped would appear again - besides, of course, the group's later records. WHY NOT CHECK OUT MY EBAY STORE -
