UNDERGROUND - 140 gram out of print original label pressing - Underground was recorded in 1967, about 20 years into the career of this wholly distinctive and unorthodox pianist-composer. Whenever the understated saxophone talents of Charlie Rouse accompany Thelonious Monk, one is assured of an invigorating set of music--and this collection is no exception. Supported by Larry Gales on bass and the inimitable Ben Riley on drums, Monk and Rouse elaborate on immortal compositions like "Ugly Beauty." On "In Walked Bud," the quartet is joined by vocalist Jon Hendricks. With jagged themes and unusual variations of meter and key, Underground showcases an aging Monk's still-brilliant eccentricity on the piano. A good bit looser than much of Monk's earlier work, he and Rouse infuse this date with their tag-team humor and unrelenting musical enthusiasm.

MONK - 180 GRAM OUT OF PRINT LIMITED EDITION - The familiar "formula" that Monk utilized throughout most of his '60s tenure at Columbia was firmly in place on this, his fourth album for the label. But that recipe--originals sprinkled with covers, played by a quartet of familiar sidemen (veteran tenor sax accomplice Charlie Rouse, newer compatriots Ben Riley on drums, and bassist Larry Gales)--proves deceptively facile on the expanded reissue of this 1965 album. While Gershwin's elegant "Liza" and the standard "April in Paris" are perfect fodder for the pianist's harmonic and rhythmic tweaking, his playful take on the children's song "That Old Man" ably demonstrates how the musician could recast even the most foursquare composition in his own likeness. Even more revealing is Monk's solo exploration of the hoary "I Love You (Sweetheart of My Dreams)," a performance where his left hand seems to mine the stride foundations of his beloved J.P. Johnson, while his right flits restlessly in a different half-century. Rouse takes rewarding turns in the spotlight on "Just You, Just Me" and "Pannonica" (the latter normally a Monk solo excursion),

MONK'S BLUES - Monk made idiosyncrasy a way of life and a way of music--all without artifice or cliché. He was unrepeatable and unforgettable. No one else sounds much like him, although I have a George Russell recording where Russell (more known as an arranger than a soloist) betrays some influence.

Monk is most known for his quartets, but this is a big band setting with multi-layered and swinging arrangements by Oliver Nelson. Yet Monk is still Monk: the use of space, always playing the melody, the long, inimitable arpeggios, the percussive sensibility, the serious playfulness and earnestness without being precious or pretentious.

Yes, Monk tended to play the same tunes repeatedly at this point in his career, but these renditions shine, nevertheless. Listen. Enjoy. Be thankful. Human are bestowed with the ability to manifest beauty.

MILES DAVIS & THELONIOUS MONK LIVE AT NEWPORT - TREMENDOUSLY RARE PRESSING

Miles & Monk at Newport was a combined album of a Miles Davis appearance at Newport with an appearance of Thelonious Monk, These are two different performances at two different times. Miles Davis and Thelonious Monk do not perform together on this LP.

Both sides represented live appearances at the Newport Jazz Festival

On the first side of the LP was a series of high tempo performances of bebop tunes and other staples of the Davis live repertoire from 1958. The performance was contemporaneous with Davis' Milestones album. Aside from the 1973 release Jazz at the Plaza (also a 1958 concert) during the LP era, this was the only legitimate (non-bootleg) recording of a live Davis combo performance earlier than the 1960 Blackhawk recordings. As such, this performance and Jazz at the Plaza were the only legitimate live recordings representing the Kind of Blue sextet. On the second side were a few numbers by Thelonious Monk's combo, from a 1963 Newport appearance. It featured the idiosyncratic appearance by clarinetist Pee Wee Russell.

THELONIOUS MONK –  CRISS CROSS – Limited Edition –  OUT OF PRINT PRESSING.

CRISS CROSS - Cut in a series of sessions from late 1962 through early 1963, this album features Monk backed by his longtime sideman Charlie Rouse on tenor and rhythm men Frank Dunlop on drums and John Ore on bass. The material is basically standard Monk. Heard hear are such Monk standards as "Hackensack", "Rhythm-A-Ning", and a superior Monk solo on "Crepuscule With Nellie". Overall the performances are exciting and energetic, the title track "Criss-Cross" stands out. This is fairly typical Monk from his Columbia years. He has long since established his personal style, but he still has a fresh imagination and produces fantastic performances throughout. Charlie Rouse is in top form as well. He was Monk's main hornman from the late 50's through most of the 60's. His extended stay within the realms of Monk's compositions and accompaniment pays off in a singular musical understanding between the two. He was such a part of Monk's group sound that a few of these tracks would sound odd with another hornman playing them. This is very nearly a great Monk album, and is recommended to all fans, or those new to his music.

MISTERIOSO - RECORDED ON TOUR - The most impressive point to be made about this record is that it is a product of precisely the same night's work as the earlier Riverside album, Thelonious In Action; the two are in all respects a matched set. On the evening of August 7, 1958, recording equipment was rather precariously set up in the always-overcrowded Five Spot, the room where Monk had made his triumphant recent return to the New York club scene and was now appearing with a new quartet featuring Johnny Griffin. This turned out to be the first successful live recording of Thelonious (he had rejected the results of a night's work here a month earlier), and the substantial number of Monk-approved performances were readily programmed onto two full and equally memorable albums.

Monk's second album for Riverside continued the label's initial plan to broaden his audience by the use of recognizable standard tunes instead of his somewhat frightening originals. Thelonious' uncompromising performances, along with major league support (Art Blakey and Oscar Pettiford) and strong material, helped to turn this concept into lastingly superior jazz. Particularly notable are Monk's sharp thrusts of humor on such well-worn pieces as "Honeysuckle Rose" and "Tea for Two." The album's impact was strengthened by one of the most unique covers ever devised. Riverside went so far as to print near-postage-sized Monk stamps, quite a few of which reportedly found their way through the actual mail.
