Anthems such as the raucous "Pinball Wizard" and the surprisingly serene "I'm Free" emphasize the kinetic power of the band, while Townshend's cast of characters (the perverted Uncle Ernie, the inscrutable Tommy) reveals a wild and unconventional imagination. Das Remastering von Classic Records dürfte damit an der Spitze der bislang erhältlichen Versionen der legendären ersten Rockoper stehen! Chris Bellman vom Bernie Grundman Mastering entlockte dem Original-Zweispurband erstaunliches und Classic Records-Chef Mike Hobson sorgte dafür, dass der Who-Fan hier eine authentische Replik des einstigen Dreifach-Klappcovers und des dazugehörende 12-seitige Booklet in den Händen halten darf!
Mit „Tommy“ haben sich Pete Townsend und seine Formation ein Denkmal gesetzt, neben „Who’s Next“ und „Quadrophenia“ ist dieses Album die erfolgreichste Who-Platte.
