Description

THE TWILIGHTS – "Once Upon A Twilight”

Original vinyl release.  EMI/Columbia; cat. # SCXO 7870.  Stereo – 1968.

This is the legendary second LP from one of Australia’s top sixties groups.  Nowadays generally considered (and rightly so) a masterpiece of early Aussie "pop-psych", the album is highly sought after among serious collectors of music in this genre.

The rarer stereo pressing offered here, demonstrates the remarkable attention to detail and production values that make these dozen songs arguably Australia's very own "Sgt Pepper's".  It features Grammy-winner Terry Britten's most accomplished batch of songs and his stunning guitar work.  Britten later achieved plaudits as a songwriter for the likes of Zoot, Cliff Richard, Tina Turner and Michael Jackson.  Here, his songs are given a tight, confident treatment by the sextet, led by the vocals of Glenn Shorrock (Axiom, Little River Band).  The moods shift from whimsy, poignancy and outright progressive rock, to the style The Twilights were best known for: finely honed melodic pop.

As if the music contained in the grooves isn't astounding enough, the cover will floor you.  Groundbreaking for its time, it features a colourful gatefold 3-D pop up display (see accompanying picture).

This LP has been well loved over the years, but it’s still in superb condition, all things considered (and it’s pretty much impossible to find in its original format).  The cover is close to impeccable, while there are “ownership” labels on it, as well as on the actual record label itself.  But let me assure interested collectors about the most important aspect: the record itself sounds damn fine, with minimal snap crackle & pop – it’s terrific for a record of its age!!!  It will be shipped to the successful bidder in a protective plastic sleeve.

A worthy addition to any avid collector of Aussie pop/rock history!
