Label/Format: Fontana – Original black and silver format with heavily textured surfaces (please see my label scan).

Label Condition: Reference standard ultra clean examples that show only just a couple of ultra faint and small spindle traces. These are as fresh and clean and intensely coloured as when purchased back in 1966.

Cat Number: STL 5355.

Mode / Speed: Stereo / 33.3 rpm.

Weight of this Record: 135 grams. [These days, many modern Audiophile reissues are pressed on super-heavyweight 180 gram vinyl. Only a small percentage of ‘vintage vinyl’ was ever pressed this heavy. Records pressed in the 1960s averaged around 140 to 150 grams. Records pressed in the 1970s were usually lighter and averaged more around 115 – 125 grams. Some records pressed around 1973 were very thin and light due an oil crisis and shortage around this time. Some records were even issued on recycled vinyl from this period and sounded poor with crackle and surface noise evident from the very first play. If any record I buy is deemed ‘recycled’, I will never offer it, I have a very simple test to detect these records if I suspect this to be the case other than audible imperfection. Some records from this period were even pressed on other materials the most notable was ‘Dynaflex’, used by RCA around this time. Although inferior to vinyl, this at least mostly sounded reasonably acceptable but pressings on this material were wafer thin and flimsy. Beyond the 70s, records often became thinner and lighter still but most played fine but were never quite the quality as from the ‘Golden Era’]. (This was based on ‘average’ weights for 20 records from these eras. Later pressings were usually lighter still).

Rarity: Much rarer in stereo and try to find a better, clean cop of this record. Yes, another from that collection of barely played records, this one will also remind again what these once looked and sounded like when first purchased

Brief Artist & Album Info: Scarce debut album from one the UK’s most popular ‘singles’ bands of the mid-sixties. An ultimate first pressing in the much rarer stereo format with textured labels. Both these and the ultra shiny playing surfaces that shows barely any marks along with immaculate sound reitterate just how many times this has even seen daylight. This includes their most famous hit single that started it all – a superb version of Chip Taylor’s ‘Wild Thing’, as famous now as it was all those years ago. Fronted by Reg Presley (born Reginald Maurice), his distinctive vocals caught the mood of the record buying public just right and a string of hit singles followed. But album sales were far less and their ‘long-players’ have becoming collectable and sort after, this is never an easy one to find and most that do surface are mono copies often in terrible conditions. Just think, this record was issued when England last won the football World Cup!!, way back in the distant past of 1966. This ultra clean and enjoyable record should please all collectors from the golden-era of popular music.

This Cover’s Potential for Wear: Quite high.

Cover Grade and Format: Happy to grade this classic cover as EX. A single format, laminated on the front, this wraps around the closed edges on to three rear flipbacks. Printed and made in England.

Lamination & Front: A very fine front that looks colourful and attractive. The only blemish are a couple of surface laminate creases near the top right corner area - these have fairly modest visibility. These apart little else to fault and this classic artwork looks superb. Retaining a lovely fresh shine and clarity, all is fully adhered with no lifting or blisters and there are no other really noteworthy creases, a small half moon apart. Minimal traces of any friction rubs or dulling and this front has aged little. The right edge sees the laminate end slightly short of full width, but the exposed strip is clean and unchipped and shows no grime-line formation. The cave artwork was taken at Cheddar Caves in England.

Cover Back: The back is also very neat and has no creasing and any rim marks are very slight and faint. Mild traces of set-off and the odd tiny tone spot or two, again showing little. The flipbacks are neat and clean too, very slightly darkened but no grime on the ends which remain virtually burr-free.

Top Edge: Barely any traces of wear.

Bottom Edge: And again.

Right Edge(s), and Type: Clean and quite sharp with little wear and no feathering. Records enters here.

Spine and Text: Great spine too: Solid and straight with minimal compression. All text is perfect and unworn under the uncracked laminate.

Corners: Tiny tip rubs to the right pair but barely anything on the spine. All retain superb shape.

Cover Summary: A splendid example overall, the creases apart, the front would nigh-on perfect. It should please many collectors.

The Inner: The original lined inner is included which has had tape put on the seams on the back which have darkened considerably.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: Mint(-) or as close as they ever get and with nothing more than ultra faint surface traces and the odd fine hairline with scrutiny under light. Very clean and retaining a stunning shine, intensely black and heavily pressed. Played once or twice most and looking in age-defying condition. Visually a beautiful record that should please most collectors and even the connoisseurs. Realistically 43-year-old records will rarely show-up much better than this

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippetts or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing B&W speakers that include the legendary tweeter from their awesome Nautilus range that reveals every blemish or miniscule sound present on any record.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: This rare stereo gem plays up to its high visual grading with nothing to fault. Strong, distortion-free sound, all frequencies are sharp and clear - sound quality is high with a wide dynamic range and richly detailed stereo sound. Any surface sounds barely even register and no pops or clicks were noted, few of the early copies will match this let alone better this one. Both channels are clean and sharp, I am certain this record has hardly been played and no damage or wear has been inflicted in these pristine grooves. Nothing spoilt my pleasure when play-grading this wonderful record. This copy will prove near impossible to find significantly better for audio quality or shiny clean looks.

End Piece: Great 60s band that had their own unique sound, at times playful and even risqué, they were justifiably popular. One of the classic 60’s covers and includes one of the greatest 60’s anthems, this album and band truly did come from nowhere, to near, if brief superstardom. Do not lose this one, strong recommendation is mandatory.

SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT neccessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
