THE STEPHENS -- Revelation Five -- hard to find, original 1979 U.S. album. Here's another tasty gem for fans of Private Press/Outsider Xian LP's. Starting with the strangely-posed cover photo -- the dad with afro, tinted shades and chest hair, daughter with metal braces -- you just know you're in for some oddball Real People/Family Band music. The title track "Revelation Five" is the all-time classic here, a jawdropping Mystical-Psychy concoction where Johnny Stephens sings about God holding a scroll sealed 7 times and 10,000 raging angels against an eerie, insistent, mournful beat. It gets stranger and more disturbing the longer you listen to it ... killer stuff. Almost is good is "Prayer Of Mary Magdalene," a fragile, mournful Folk-Rock number with female vocals in which Mary laments for the departed Jesus. The rest of the LP is enjoyable Xian Country-Rock, but nothing equals the gonzo heights of "Revelation Five" on the DIY - Outsider Music meter. A very hard record to come by -- I've never seen another copy. See photo for track list. Cover: VG+/VG++, ring wear and light wear at corners.
