Brief Info: Issued in 1981 to very positive reviews, this was another worldwide best-selling album. The only surprise, it failed to quite top the UK album charts peaking at number 2. It has unmissable cover artwork and here seen to nigh-on maximum advantage on this very fresh cover-protected copy. The record hardly played and sounds superb. Another gem from this impressive collection to please most collectors.

Cover Grade and Format: EXCELLENT(++): arguably better. A single unlaminated format with matt, smooth surfaces. Printed and made in England, uncredited, includes the graphic card inner sleeve.

Cover Front: Highly attractive with deep unfaded colour. Barely any rubbing at all, any creasing little, gentle and faint, seen under light, no sticker issues. This will prove hard to find much better.

Cover Back: As above, the lack of ring wear or rim impression always great news on such covers.

Top Edge: Straight and unworn.

Bottom Edge: Almost the same, any rub traces on this storage edge tiny and faint.

Right Edge(s), and Type: Clean, ultra sharp with barely any thickening even as seen viewed end-on. Record enters on this edge that is guaranteed untrimmed or enhanced.

Spine and Text: Immaculate and totally unworn. Solid, but quite thin, straight with no compression. All text is perfect and unworn on the fresh white surface, also perfectly centred on the narrow depth as-seen.

Corners: Any tip rubs tiny and light, better than excellent to mostly near mint shape retained with no knocks.

Cover Summary: A very strong all-round example of this quality early 1980’s cover, one that will prove very difficult to find much better. This beautiful item should please many, if not most collectors.

The Inner Sleeve: NEAR MINT: thin unlined card with a deeply recessed top opening that is mint unworn. Clean, fresh with no creasing, any blemishes tiny and faint, barely anything really. All edges unsplit with no repairs.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: NEAR MINT: a superb visual copy that is very clean with equally fine shine and solidly pressed. A copy with minimal plays on all the evidence with any surface traces few, very light and faint as seen critically under bright light. No penetrating stylus scratches, viewed in average room light, barely anything even registers. Any minor blemishes purely within the pressing and with no sound at all. Visually a super record that should please many, if not most collectors.

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: This quality 1980s Stones album plays up to it’s high visual grading with barely anything to fault. Offering strong, distortion-free sound, all frequencies are sharp and clear – sound quality is very high with a wide dynamic range and very detailed sound. Any surface sounds are minimal indeed and this is an exceptional clean pressing with no tracking issues*. Few available copies will outperform this very early pressing I feel sure. Both channels are clean and sharp, I am certain this record has been played very lightly and has been very well stored and carefully handled, almost certainly in a non-smoking environment. Nothing spoilt my pleasure when play-grading this wonderful record. It will prove very difficult to find significantly better and can be strongly recommended.

* As played-graded on a high-end Linn LP12 Sondek turntable with Ittok Mk II arm and Ortofon Quintet Black moving coil cartridge tracking at 2.2 grams. Records are a ‘contact’ format, and few will avoid the odd minor sound blemish.

You will NOT get tired, dull looking, dust infested records inside worn and foggy covers with tatty inners from this seller and that’s a promise and guarantee. SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT necessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
