Emotional Rescue holds the core of what could have been a great album. It would have been great without as many songs, because not all of them are even very good. It seems everyone comes away with a slightly different favorite five or six songs, and for me the highlights are "Dance," "Emotional Rescue," "Send It To Me," "Let Me Go," "Down in the Hole," and possibly "She's So Cold."

You could let it go at that and have a terrific short LP or a longish EP. Or, wrap those songs in another couple of outtakes from the day, specifically "Everything's Turning to Gold" and "If I Were a Dancer," and you'd have real dynamite here. As others have noted, the Stones would have done well to have embraced funk and disco, because the songs here that lean that way have a lot of energy and spirit.

Besides the great five or six songs, there's one absolute gem of a tiny moment that almost by itself makes the album essential for any Stones fan--that part in "Let Me Go" where Mick and Keith (I believe) harmonize about becoming a playboy, hanging out in gay bars, and moving to the west side of town. It's a marvelous moment in which either Mick is mimicking Keith's country croaking or Keith is mocking his twin's lazy white boy soul--it's hard to tell, and it's obviously on purpose. Here are the Glimmer Twins in all their raggedy glory, as much alike as they are different from one another, and still, while a little worse for the wear, unafraid of putting it all out there.

Coasting on the success of Some Girls, the Stones offered more of the same on Emotional Rescue. Comprised of leftovers from the previous album's sessions and hastily written new numbers, Emotional Rescue may consist mainly of filler, but it's expertly written and performed filler. The Stones toss off throwaways like the reggae-fueled, mail-order bride anthem "Send It to Me" or rockers like "Summer Romance" and "Where the Boys Go" with an authority that makes the record a guilty pleasure, even if it's clear that only two songs -- the icy but sexy disco-rock of "Emotional Rescue" and the revamped Chuck Berry rocker "She's So Cold" -- come close to being classic Stones.

(d)         The record is  apparently pressed on a RELATIVELY  thick, inflexible vinyl. This is NOT a thin, flimsy ('dynaflex' type),  vinyl, but not the thickest, most rigid vinyl, either.

(e)         Of course, this is a full-bodied ANALOG recording, and not an inferior, digital recording!!!
