40 songs, each exactly one minute long. These strange and oddly beautiful little songs pastiche the advertising jingle while advancing the Residential "Theory of Obscurity" - although the songs are not endorsements of any known products or services. The Residents have obscurely stated that any of these songs should be repeated three times in a row to form a "pop song". The Residents purchased 40 one-minute advertising slots on San Francisco's most popular Top-40 radio station at the time, KFRC, such that the station played each track of their album over three days. This prompted an editorial in Billboard magazine questioning whether the act was art or advertising.
When MTV was in its infancy, the Residents' videos were in heavy rotation since they were among the few music videos available to broadcasters. The Residents' earliest videos are in the New York Museum of Modern Art's permanent collection. Indeed video's were made for ALL of these 40 tracks and some are among the very best the Residents ever made.

*IN PROTEST OF BOREDOM was a radio show back in 1980's on Public Radio station KAZU - hosted by JERRY FORD, who was also the leader of the avant Punk band BENT.
He also worked for me at my record store back in 1980's and introduced me to various Cyptic Corp. people (as well as Snakefinger and various original Mothers of Invention members).
This copy i am assuming was from his Radio show promos - we both visited the Cryptic Corp. offices quite regularly in those days ...me for buying LPs and 45s for the store and only a bit for promos; Jerry's show was much more the perfect showcase for RESIDENTS material, though I also fitted them in quite often ...from these albums I would often play CONSTANTINOPLE (Duckstab) and MOISTURE plus THE ACT OF BEING POLITE (Commercial Album) on my "Psychorotic Cure" program.
Please see my other listings for more RESIDENTS
and other CLASSIC 80'S, 90'S and INDIE ROCK LPs
...continuing over next few days and weeks
