The Radio Rascals story:
The Gene Kardos Orchestra wasn't know for their hot jazz, but that's not what their bandleader/alto saxophonist had in mind when he brought his group together in 1931
Kardos wanted to play fast-temp, enthusiastic, fun music. So, instead of pulling in musicians schooled in jazz, he wanted only those who were capable of reading music, and reading it quickly.
He may have felt that his audience, mired in an economy that was spiraling down, had enough trouble. Offering them a way out, even if only for a few minutes, is a noble goal.
"Radio Rascals' Orchestra" is one of the pseudonyms shared by Gene Kardos Orchestra, Dick Robertson Orchestra, and Joe Haymes Orchestra.
