Description

THE POISON IVY - "CLINGING MEMORIES", Granta Records (GR 7EP 1011) 1964.

This is the incredibly rare 1964 beat EP by the little known band, The Poison Ivy, on the equally rare Granta label based in Cambridge.

This EP features the band performing well known R&B hits in a British beat style - featuring here are John Lee Hooker's "Dimples", Muddy Waters' "I've Got My Mojo Working", Arthur Crudup's "My Baby Left Me" and the Gary Paxton and Buddy Mize penned "Sure Know A Lot About Love".

Although these are clearly quite primitive recordings by a young band, they most definitely have something about them - to my ears, all of these songs are very reminiscent of the early Rolling Stones recordings. They are definitely a little bit different and a bit bluesier than the more mainstream Liverpudlian beat sound.

This EP comes in it's original natural-coloured card sleeve, which has basic artwork silk-screen printed on to the front cover in simple red and green - see photo. Although this sleeve is unsophisticated, that is most definitely all part of the charm... it has the definite feel of being "homemade" rather than "cheaply made".

There is also a credit on the sleeve to this EP being "A Peter Haddon Entertainment Production".

And this is about all the info I can give on this record and band - this is such a rare EP that even with the internet at my fingertips, I am struggling to find any info on this record, or even any examples of other copies sold in the past.

NOTE: I have carefully cleaned this LP on my Moth professional record cleaning machine.

CONDITION:

VINYL  =  EXCELLENT-   (No visible or audible deep scratches, no groove damage, no excessive surface noise, etc. This record plays very strongly and cleanly without any distortion. During the silent sections before and between the tracks, there is a minute amount of surface noise in the pressing that disappears a soon as the music starts. Under my bright grading lamp I can make out a few very light hairline marks on the vinyl - normal wear caused by simply taking the record in and out of it's sleeve - but none of these correspond to any kind of unwelcome sounds during playback. The only reason I have given it an EX- grading rather than a straight EX, is that occasionally during the songs there is the odd faint click - definitely not loud enough to ruin the listening experience and in my opinion all part of the original vinyl's pressing rather than any damage. Many other ebay traders would have probably graded this higher but I feel happier including a certain degree of "ebay caution". Overall, whilst not quite a perfect mint copy, still a great "honest" example of an extremely rare record. I think that realistically, this is about as good a secondhand copy of this EP as you are ever likely to find... unless someone's got an unplayed one tucked away somewhere!

Labels are clean with only a few of the very lightest spindle trails.

NOTE: I have thoroughly tested this record on my Linn LP12 Sondek, which generally provides an accurate and critical performance. However, I cannot guarantee exactly how it will sound on your turntable)

SLEEVE = EXCELLENT (Generally great, natural-coloured card flip-back sleeve - nice and flat without any rips, big creases, tears or defacing, etc. Would have been a better grading if it had not been for a very slight crease to the top right corner and along the open edge of the sleeve - see photo)

NOTE: it is probably worth pointing out that we are a long standing physical secondhand record shop, with literally decades of record trading/grading experience between us. Please read my description carefully, and if you like what you read, bid with confidence - don't be put off my my honest and accurate gradings... in many cases, items I have marked down are still in much better shape than those so-called "excellent" and "mint" items listed by the new breed of overnight internet traders and self-proclaimed experts that currently plague ebay. Check out my feedback for more info.
