ORANGE PEELS
Monster rare surf LP
It’s said by some that the Orange Peels were a group from New Jersey, and that’s probably borne out of the little label that pressed this up : Wight Audio Studio in Princeton, New Jersey.
Some have also placed this in 1965 – 1966 but that’s not so – just a look at the selections will tell you that this is earlier. They’re doing songs like “Bull Dog” and “Honky Tonk,” and “Rebel Rouser.” All proto-surf standards. Then there’s also the blank back of this Lp, which has the original owner’s name written across it with the date : 1962. That ought to solve it !
Most of these are instrumentals, but there are a few vocals too – and they’re pretty deranged sounding. There’s their version of “(I’m A) King Bee” which is really a garage band classic, and their take on “Mashed Potatoes” is like a frat band gone bezerk with the guitar player crudely trying to keep from catching his fingers in the strings. Wild, raw, and unbridled.
This was a private pressing and there were likely only a few hundred of them made. It’s gained such legendary status that it got booted in Sweden a while back – so don’t get fooled – THIS IS THE ORIGINAL.
