DESCRIPTION:  The missing link between the Velvet Underground and the Ramones. There were a few essential bands from this time period - the NY Dolls, the Dictators, and the Modern Lovers. Led by Jonathan Richman, the protopunk band The Modern Lovers came out of Massachusetts in the early 1970s. Their classic debut album, the eponymous The Modern Lovers contained heartfelt songs about dating awkwardness, growing up in Massachusetts, and love of life; and a sparseness, simplicity, and artsy edge that would become part of the DIY coming punk movement. Many feel their best work is the first album and the outtakes from those sessions. The sound of the band owed a great deal to the influence of The Velvet Underground. Richman became enamored with the Velvet Underground while he was still in high school, and after graduating in 1969, he moved to New York City where he became personally acquainted with the band. Richman spent a couple of weeks sleeping on Velvet’s lead singer Lou Reed's sofa before moving into the Hotel Albert, a residence known for its poor conditions. After nine months in New York, Richman moved back to his native Boston and organized a band modeled after the Velvets. Christening themselves The Modern Lovers, the group included Richman's childhood friend John Felice (later of the Real Kids) as guitarist, David Robinson (later co-founder of The Cars) on drums, and Rolfe Anderson on bass. The Modern Lovers played their first date in September 1970, barely a month after Richman's return to Boston. By this time their setlist already included such classic Richman songs as Roadrunner, She Cracked, and Hospital. In early 1971 Anderson and Felice departed; they were replaced by bassist Ernie Brooks (later worked with David Johansen, Elliott Murphy, and Gary Lucas) and keyboardist Jerry Harrison (later of Talking Heads), completing the classic lineup of the Modern Lovers. This new configuration became very popular in the Boston area, and by the fall of 1971, enthusiastic word-of-mouth led to the Modern Lovers' first exposure to a major label when Stuart Love of Warner Bros. Records contacted them and organized the band's first multi-track session at Intermedia Studio in Boston. The demo produced from this session generated more attention from the industry, and soon A&M Records was interested in the band as well. In April 1972, the Modern Lovers traveled to Los Angeles where they held two demo sessions; the first was produced by the Velvet Underground's John Cale for Warner Bros. while the second was produced by Alan Mason for A&M. More demo sessions were held with Kim Fowley in 1973 (the basis for the Bomp LP/CD The Original Modern Lovers), but it is from these two 1972 sessions that the original Beserkley release was culled. Interestingly, prior to forming and running Beserkley, Matthew Kaufman’s then employer was A&M Records. This short lived chapter of Jonathan Richman’s long career (he recognizes 1977’s Jonathan Richman and the Modern Lovers as his first album) will forever shine the brightest (his other Beserkley albums are worth checking out as well). Not for nothing did the Sex Pistols cover Roadrunner, it appears in The Great Rock 'n' Roll Swindle. Quote Johnny Rotten, "How does this song start?" The reply, "1-2-3-4-5-6!" –  Classic! An essential album!

THIS ITEM IS NEW AND UNPLAYED. Used items will include condition details for the cover, disc, inserts, etc.

NOTE TO POTENTIAL BUYERS:  If the jacket or disc (unless sealed) is punched, marked, or cut in any manner, denoting a promotional/review copy, I will state that as part of the item description. Also if an issue is a "music club" edition, that will be noted in the item description. (The below information was last updated 10/08/22)

If you have any questions or if you have additional information, especially corrections, to the description, please e-mail me. I particularly enjoy when an artist, band member, or someone who has personal background knowledge of a particular album/artist and offers their insight/information of that recording, which I will include with the description for future listings of that release. As a collector of many years, part of the hobby side for me is to learn about the background of the artists and music that I collect. Hopefully, sharing some of this information in my descriptions will help educate and enhance your listening experience.

All LPs are removed from their jackets and placed outside of the jacket for shipping. If an album comes sealed (and will be noted as such in the above description), it will be shipped whole unless you request that I open it up to place the disc outside of the jacket for shipping. Both jacket and disc are placed inside of an outer plastic sleeve before packing for shipping. I use professional corrugated record mailers with inside packing.
