This was really the first retrospective done on one of Motown's best and most exciting acts, THE MARVELETTES. This 2 album set was released in 1975, and sports 28 spectacular songs , from PLEASE MR. POSTMAN, PLAYBOY , BEECHWOOD 4-5789 through TOO MANY FISH IN THE SEA, DON'T MESS WITH BILL, THE HUNTER GETS CAPTURED BY THE GAME to the end of 1970 and THAT'S HOW HEARTACHES ARE MADE, MARIONETTE, and A BREATH TAKING GUY. The series double and triple ANTHOLOGY albums were very successful for Motown, and the label finally got around to doing the much needed anthology of hits that the marvelous Marvelettes recorded for Tamla over an almost 10 year period. Many of these songs had never even been made available on album, with true gems like I'LL KEEP HOLDING ON and HE'S A GOOD GUY [ YES HE IS ] finally being available on album. From the moment I got this album back then, it began an appreciation and love of The Marvelettes music. They were diverse, with many different styles, from girl group to soul , and with 2 lead singers, GLADYS HORTON and WANDA YOUNG ROGERS. I remember that this album got press in a magazine called Phonograph Record with an excellent review & photo of the group. Back in the 70's, there had been very little written on the group, and it was noted that this album did not have a booklet, like all the other Anthology releases did up to that point. The Marvelettes story was one that needed the history to go along with it, but there was no mention of any of the member's names or a biography. It is a gatefold cover, and does include many photos crammed onto the center spread. It was the music that mattered after all, and this double album was the first time that every hit, plus important B-sides were gathered all in one place . Even the mid-chart hits like MY DADDY KNOWS BEST, HERE I AM BABY, and I'M GONNA HOLD ON AS LONG AS I CAN with a rare lead by ANN BOGAN, who came into the group after Gladys left in 1967, are all killer, no filler. Wanda's SO LONG BABY from 1961 [ the flip to PLEASE MR. POSTMAN ] is all out bluesy wailing , and 50 years later still resonates as a classic performance, as all the music on this double album of 28 songs still is - classic, original , soulful and rockin'. This was my introduction to The Marvelettes , and if you want vinyl, this album has all the A-sides, plus important B-sides.

(c)             The records are  apparently pressed on a beautiful, thick, inflexible vinyl, which was usually used for the first or very early pressings. Usually, the sound on such thick vinyl pressings is full-bodied, vivid, and even dramatic. Do not expect to obtain such a majestic analog sound from a digital recording!

(d)          Of course, this is a full-bodied ANALOG recording, and not an inferior, digital recording!!!
