THE INDO-BRITISH ENSEMBLE ‘Curried Jazz’ ORIGINAL 1969 UK STEREO VINYL LP

 

Front laminated flipback picture sleeve. Composed, arranged and conducted by Victor Graham, starring Dev Kumar on sitar, Chris Karan on tabla, Sitara on tamboura, plus flautist Ray Swinfield and Kenny Wheeler on flugelhorn, among others.

 

In 1969, the imaginative indie record producer, and jazz-lover, Mark Sutton, who owned his own recording studio in Soho, gathered together some of the finest session jazz musicians working in London together with husband and wife, Dev and Sitara Kumar to record a series of what we might today call "fusion". The result was "Curried Jazz".

 

The producers for the sessions were the great Ken Barnes (find out more about him at the excellent Vinyl Vulture site) and Michael Hall. Victor Graham composed,arranged and conducted the pieces to arrive at this fantastic blend of jazz improvisation with Indian raga, following the influence of Ravi Shankar on the UK at the time plus the success of Joe Harriott's series of IndoJazz Suite Fusions with John Mayer.   Really very similar to Joe Harriott’s sound.  Hugely underated and now really hard to turn up, Sitar/jazz fusion album.

 

Ex-, one or two very light surface marks which do not affect play.  Occasional whisper on the very quiet intro to Side One but I have play-tested this well and it plays Ex throughout.
