There were an awful lot of American musicians in the late 60s and early 70s whose sound had elements that could be traced back to Buffalo Springfield. The Illinois Speed Press were better than many, partly because of the double guitar front line of co-founders Paul Cotton and Kal David which gave the music a bit of an Allman Brothers feel at times, and partly because, while a lot of those other bands were concentrating on the Richie Furay side of Springfield and making it blander and more commercial, the Illinois Speed Press stuck more with the hard-rocking and intelligent Steve Stills/Neil Young side. (There’s even a song on the LP called “Pay the Price”, although it’s not the Steve Stills song.) This is the first of their two albums, and the only one to feature a real band (the second, Duet, was essentially Cotton and David with studio musicians, after which David formed the Fabulous Rhinestones and Cotton replaced Jim Messina in Poco). Notable tracks include “Hard Luck Story”, a slow Chicago blues; “R.N.S.”, which sounds a bit like “Midnight Rider”; “Be a Woman”, which comes the closest to the Buffalo Springfield sound; and the two quiet pieces, “Here Today” and the short “Sky Song”, with lyrics about a chance meeting with an upstanding member of society (a popular theme of the era).
