Label/Format: Parlophone with matt fairly smooth surfaces. Side one has the embossed ‘K T’ tax codes with both unworn, neat and crisp. Label details clearly seen on my pictures.

Label Conditions: Both very clean, fresh and attractive with only light, fine and faint spindle marks and no wear around the hole area. This record plays superbly.

Brief Info: Album number six for this classic band, and the first of two issued in 1967, the ‘Summer of Love’. Famed for its psychedelic artwork, this was recorded at Abbey Road Studios at the same time as The Beatles ‘Sgt Pepper’. A brilliant psych-pop album that sold quite well and charted in the UK. However, most copies were sold in the mono mode, the format of the era. This a lovely clean copy with gorgeous hardly marked playing surfaces and impressive stereo sound presenting the songs quite differently to the more common mono version. With a very fine and attractive fresh cover and original inner included, this is a gem from arguably the greatest ever year in music history.

Cover Grade and Format: EXCELLENT: a single format with the front laminated. This covers all the folds and ends on three rear flipbacks. The main back panel is matt and quite smooth. Printed and made in England by Garrod & Lofthouse Ltd, includes the ‘Patents Pending’ text. The sepia coloured EMI promotional inner sleeve is also included.

Lamination & Front: A beautiful looking front with the very in-vogue psychedelic style artwork of the era. The laminate still clear with any dulling modestly light with no lifting – that always a bonus on more highly coloured vivid graphics. Two or three gentle, light half-moon surface creases away from the edges are largely lost against the complex band picture and only a few fine edge hairline type ones that few can hope to avoid are barest minimum. For a 54-year-old cover, this front has withstood the test-of-time very well and remains an attractive one to hold and view.

Cover Back: A very wear-prone back due to the intensity of the colours, but this matt card has little. The odd gentle faint rub trace here-and-there, but the lack of ugly penetrating ring wear is always a major plus. Such covers often attract deep white rings around the rim and label areas which this has closely avoided at all. Any marks or creasing few and light , a little thickening to the left entrance edge gently evident only. The three flipbacks are solid and neat with any hint of rubbing tiny and minimal. Yes, a darkened end of laminate line on the spine edge where it naturally shrinks back over time, but few can hope to avoid this. The flipback ends are generally neat wtih minimal hint of thickening or burring. Given the facts of design/colour etc, this unforgiving back has fared impressively as seen.

Top Edge: Superb, straight, and unworn with full shiny laminate retention.

Bottom Edge: Virtually the same with just one tiny surface chip.

Right Edge(s), and Type: The opening edges have thickened which is evident more viewed end-on. But the exposed (non-laminated) ends have barely lost any ink so the cover remains more unusually attractive on these fragile areas.

Spine and Text: A superb spine that is barely worn at all. Solid, straight with minimal compression, the ends are gently tapered in manufacture. The text is virtually unworn under the solid and uncracked laminate, and even here, it retains impressive shine and clarity with no peeling.

Corners: Any tip rubs tiny and light, excellent shape retained with no knocks.

Cover Summary: A strong all-round example of this very wear-prone 1960’s cover, one that will prove difficult to find much better. This beautiful item should please many collectors.

The Inner Sleeve: EXCELLENT(++): the sepia promotional inner is very neat and impressive, it has aged little overall. A matt unlined inner with ‘PATENTS APPLIED FOR’ text. Hardly creased and clean with all edge folds naturally intact. The odd natural adhesive trace has only darkened very gently – way less than usual – so this retains a general freshness.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: EXCELLENT(+): arguably better. A very fine visual copy that is very clean with equally fine shine and solidly pressed. A copy with minimal plays on all the evidence with any surface marks few, very light and faint as seen critically under bright light. No penetrating stylus scratches, viewed in average room light, hardly anything even registers. Visually a super record that should please many, if not most collectors.

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippets or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing equipment, all listed further down.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: This quality popular psychedelic album plays even above it’s high visual grading with hardly anything to fault. Offering strong, distortion-free sound, all frequencies are sharp and clear – sound quality is very high with a wide dynamic range and very detailed sound. Any surface sounds are minimal indeed and this is a very clean pressing with no tracking issues* or inherent pressing noises. Few available copies will outperform this very early first stereo pressing I feel sure. Both channels are clean and sharp, I am certain this record has been played very lightly and has been generally well stored and carefully handled within a non-smoking environment. Nothing spoilt my pleasure when play-grading this lovely record, my first stereo example for years. It will prove very difficult to find significantly better and can be strongly recommended.

* As played-graded on a high-end Linn LP12 Sondek turntable with Ittok Mk II arm and Ortofon Quintet Black moving coil cartridge tracking at 2 grams. Records are a ‘contact’ format, and few will avoid the odd minor sound blemish.

SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT necessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.
