Label/Format: Parlophone – original yellow and black format (Please see my label scan for any information needed).

Label Conditions: Both in stunning conditions and bar a couple of fine, small spindle marks on side two – side one has NONE – they could pass as new. Ultra clean and supremely attractive with a freshness that is so rare to see now, this record had only received just one play before my mandatory play-grade. Side two has the very embossed ‘K T’ tax codes which are both totally unworn. So-much-so, they are not even easy to see with no thickening or ink-loss whatsoever. As can be obviously seen, side one has a ‘Factory Sample’ sticker which is 100 percent genuine, never removed or picked at. It is semi-transparant and hides nothing. This is one of the most beautiful psych-era 1960s records I have ever seen or heard which pristine sound that will match the master tape. A thing of rare beauty and one for the connoisseur.

Rarity: Scarcer in stereo, 1967 still being the mono era. Finding one barely even run-in in vinyl terms will prove beyond difficult and genuine factory samples are very rare indeed.

Brief Artist & Album Info: The Hollies were possibly better known as a singles band but made two stunning albums in the ‘Summer of Love’. Along with Evolution, Butterfly is The Hollies other psychedelic masterpiece, issued in the greatest year in rock history, 1967. This has lovely stereo sound and images beautifully. Most of the big popular bands around this time made a psych album, and Butterfly has to be regarded as one of the very best. It still has the classic Hollies harmonies and the band rarely sounded better. With the definite psych feel and mix added this is something really special. The cover too is pure 1967, brilliantly surreal with fabulous artwork. This classic should be included in any serious 60s collection and even non-Hollies fans should still love this one. Every track’s a gem but ‘Pegasus’ is worthy of special mention – it’s magnificent. A rare factory example and playing with pristine mint sound from beginning to end. Even putting this up for sale is not proving easy and I will never find another copy this nice. Truly record could pass for new for looks and sound. The cover is strong too, one blemish – I guess there always has to be one? – A small pressure split on the front top edge (0.8 inch) has been neatly repaired. That apart, the cover is almost as nice as the record and also still looks very attractive. But the real star is the record which is practically unbeatable and does one hundred percent full justice to this magnificent album.

Cover Grade and Format: EXCELLENT(++) with a small, fine quite neatly repair to a central pressure split near the top edge. You must decide if and how much this degrades. My grade excludes this as any opinion on it is purely subjective. A single format with a laminated front that wraps around all closed edges on to three large rear flipbacks. This is the correct PCS stereo cover that was printed and made in England by Garrod & Lofthouse Ltd and has the early ‘Patents pending’ text (as seen in close-up). Also included is the black and white version of the EMI promotional inner.

Lamination & Front: The only blemish is a small aforemetioned fine split near the centre of the top edge. This was present when I purchased this album, the repair quite neat and made by the owner. Being positioned where it is, the eye is not drawn to it and it is only small anyway. The laminate retains superb shine, clarity and freshness with no lifting and hardly any creases. A small few tiny edge hairline types are almost impossible to avoid. The right edge has the usual unlaminated strip which is is perfect with no chipping or grubbiness. With just the small repaired split apart, this front is immaculate.

Cover Back: The back does come close to reminding of new with any hints of ageing or discolouration ultra small and faint. Any marks or blemishes are minuscule with no rubbing or ring marks. The three flipbacks are neat, crisp, clean and undamaged with no grime-line formation on the near burr-free ends. A small tip crease to the top right corner. Again this will prove difficult to match or find better.

Top Edge: The top edge shows barely any hint of the split which is more visible on the actual front itself. So this is very neat and practically unworn.

Bottom Edge: Unworn and very smooth to the touch.

Right Edge(s), and Type: Clean, sharp with barely any wear at all. Not quite the cleanest trim in manufacture but as made with barely a hint of thickening or burring in usage. Record enters on this edge.

Spine and Text: Pretty much as made and looking little short of pristine. Solid, quite straight, uncompressed and square with its original shape fully retained. All text is perfect and unworn under the solid and uncracked laminate, this centred a little low in manufacture.

Corners: A couple of ultra small tip creases but barely any rubbing and all retain excellent to near mint shape.

Cover Summary: A beautiful cover with one small blemish – the truly stunning record more than compensates. So the sleeve not for the perfectionist, but the record itself almost certainly is.

The Inner Sleeve: MINT(-): not sure there the minus is actually, this all-round is little short of as made being clean, fresh, uncreased with all edges unsplit with no repairs.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: MINT(-): and undergraded as such. I will not grade a played record full Mint because it then becomes a used product, but if I did, this would be more than worthy. A truly supreme record with two immaculate playing surface surfaces and labels. Ultra clean, shiny, intense black and very solidly pressed. A copy now played just twice, that including my mandatory play-grade. Visually a stunning 45-year-old record that should please all collectors. I can hardy imagine finding a better copy and this wonderful psych classic is truly connoisseur standard.

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippets or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing B&W speakers that include the legendary tweeter from their awesome Nautilus range that reveals every blemish or miniscule sound present on any record.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: This gorgeous record plays even above it’s very high visual grading with nothing to fault. Strong, distortion-free sound, all frequencies are sharp and clear and never take this for granted on Hollies albums. Sound quality is very high with a wide dynamic range and very detailed sound. I heard no surface sounds worthy of mention and no pops or clicks were noted, an exceptional clean pressing for a fairly challenging album. Few copies will even match, let alone outperform this rare, early stereo pressing I feel sure and I reitterate again, this is hardly even run-in – a record time and the one original owner ignored. All those fantastic vocal harmonies fully focused, sharp and precise without even a hint of any clipping, reverb or distortion. Just one play with a blunt, chipped or misaligned stylus would destroy the groove walls and those complex vocals would be ruined. Both channels are clean and sharp and master tape quality is offered from beginning to end. Nothing whatsoever spoilt my pleasure when play-grading this wonderful record and without doubt it’s one of the cleanest sounding Hollies albums I have ever heard. This record x will prove near impossible to find better for looks and sound, the same goes for the inner and the main cover still impressive even with the small mark. With sound on offer of this quality, this record merits my strongest possible recommendation – it will be the ultimate upgrade and a rare factory sample as well – do not lose this one.

SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT necessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
