THE FIRBALLS - retrospective featuring the very best of George Tomsco and the Fireballs.  Producer Norman Petty may have been a freakin' a-hole, but he helped a number of West Texas musicians get their sounds onto record. From seminal rock-gods like Buddy Holly and Roy Orbison to "who's that?" folks like Terry Noland and "Peanuts" Wilson, Southwestern rock 'n' roll owes a tip of the Hatlo hat to Petty's precise, sympathetic production work.

The Fireballs were the best guitar instrumental group in US rock 'n' roll. [We are talking non-surf guitar groups, lest some beach-nuts jump my baggies for this statement.]

The Fireballs were built around the harmonic, tough, deft and soulful pickin' of leader George Tomsco. Tomsco is one of the best rock guitarists, IMHO. His is an instantly recognizable sound, equally full of subtlety and fire. He wrote much of the group's repertoire, and despite a swinging-door policy that reduced the group, at one point, from quintet to trio, Tomsco's musical vision saw the group through many changes with grace.

These discs are a spot-on compilation of the Fireballs' best work with Petty.  If you like guitar instrumentals, you will have kittens repeatedly whilst listening to these LP's. Choice tracks such as Torquay, FIREBALL (a super minor-key gem), TUFF N NUFF, QUITE A PARTY, CHEIF WHOOP IN KOFF, BULLDOG, FOOT TAPPER, NEARLY SUNRISE, et al, will guide you to guitar heaven!

I believe these LPS are long out of print. Don't hesitate to acquire it a truly class act like the Fireballs!

This is a price that is so low compared to purchasing any quality CD that still will never compare to vinyl. Don't Miss Out on this deal while available.

The Ventures recorded their greatest hit before they even had a record deal. "Walk Don't Run" was recorded in 1959 but no record company would sign them so, in the end, they started up Horizon Records and produced it themselves. It wasn't until it gained airplay as a radio news signature tune that it finally made its way to No.2 on the US Billboard charts.

The Ventures had formed in 1959 when Don Wilson and Bob Bogle started to play small clubs in the American Northwest. They later added Nokie Edwards (bass) and Howie Johnson (drums) and the resultant guitar-driven instrumental sound was the genesis of the 'surf-music' genre (although they, themselves, do not accept that label). Mel Taylor would later join the band as replacement for Johnson when an accident left him with spinal damage, and when Taylor died in 1996, his son, Leon, took up his sticks. The line-up has changed at times over the years but the trademark sound remains.

Since this early beginning, they have continued to tour and record, but the height of their popularity was in the 1960s. They have sold over 110 million albums during the course of their long career and, at one point, had five albums in the US Billboard top 100 at the same time.

Their musical virtuosity has inspired following generations, from The Beatles and The Eagles to Elton John and onto Aerosmith and The Go-Go's. Although the fame of the Ventures declined somewhat during the 1970s, interest was revived when the Punks and New Wavers reclaimed the music as their own.

If ever there was a “band that launched a thousand bands,” it would be the Ventures. Founded in Tacoma, Washington in 1958, their guitar-based instrumental sound would prove hugely influential, inspiring countless followers to pick up a guitar, bass or set of drumsticks and try to emulate their heroes. As these musical neophytes would soon learn, it wasn’t as easy as it initially appeared. The Ventures were masters of tone and technique, deftly arranging their instruments in a seamless approach that was instantly recognizable. Because they were an instrumental group, their songs needed no translation, which resulted in a huge worldwide following. While many rock bands have claimed to be “big in Japan” over the years, the Ventures were the country’s first rock superstars and they maintain a devoted worldwide following to this day. With over 100 million records sold, they are the best-selling instrumental group of all time.

Sundazed is proud to rightfully address the magnificent Ventures’ catalog—each title has been sourced from the original Dolton and Liberty Records’ reels and painstakingly mastered to sound and feel like they were originally intended. "For an album that yielded not a single hit (and which was one of five long-players released by the band in 1962), Mashed Potatoes and Gravy (later retitled The Ventures' Beach Party) is one hell of an enjoyable album and still a very solid and substantial album, over 40 years later. The group's sound was lean and mean all the way through, whether doing a respectful cover of George Gershwin's "Summertime" or raucous renditions of "Lucille," "Poison Ivy," and "Hully Gully." Even the seeming throwaway numbers, such as "Hot Summer (Asian Mashed)," with its faux-Eastern embellishments, and the soaring "Spudnik," are played with such virtuosity and spirit that they demand attention, and there are a surprising number of vocals on this album, albeit mostly of the nature of choruses on songs like "The Wah-Watusi" and "Hully Gully."" - Bruce Eder, allmusic

The Ventures' debut album contains songs like "Raunchy", "My Own True Love (Tara's Theme)", "Night Train", "Sleep Walk" and of course, the title track, the hit "Walk, Don't Run".

"This debut album by the Ventures is surprisingly good, considering that it was recorded in a huge rush, during an era when all concerned couldn't help but know that rock & roll albums (apart from those by Elvis Presley) generally didn't sell very well -- indeed, the fact that it is so good speaks volumes about the class and talent of the group at this early point in their history. With a sudden and totally unexpected number two national hit in "Walk, Don't Run" and a burgeoning demand for live performances, the quartet went in and recorded the best 11 tracks they knew to get a long-player together, all done in such a hurry that the members themselves couldn't stay around long enough to be photographed for the cover (those are stand-ins). The result is surprisingly sophisticated in its use of stereo (then still relatively unusual in rock & roll, stereo LPs having only debuted three years earlier, and largely confined to classical recordings), dividing the sound of the band quite neatly on two sides, thus giving LP purchasers a treat that owners of the single "Walk, Don't Run" would miss -- not only the sound separation that was so prized by audiophiles of the era, but crisp presentation of each instrument, dividing the two guitars very neatly. Thus, the casual listener could play with the speaker settings and balances, and the serious fans could get in close on the actual playing. The material is a mix of originals and hits drawn from every category, including earlier rock & roll instrumentals ("Raunchy"), R&B "Night Train," and even film music ("My Own True Love [Tara's Theme]") -- one can just make out the familiar Max Steiner Gone With the Wind motif on the latter, and it is a fairly inventive approach to an old musical chestnut, rebuilding it from the ground up. The material all has a lean jauntiness, most unexpectedly "Night Train," which sounds closer in spirit to Chet Atkins here than to Buddy Morrow or King Curtis. The originals were no filler, either, "The McCoy" being a hot piece of surf guitar showcasing all concerned." - Bruce Eder, allmusic

THE FABULOUS VENTURES - High Definition 180g Red Translucent Colored Vinyl Remastered From Original Dolton & Liberty Records' Analog Tapes! Limited to 1000 Copies!

Twelve selections from the instrumental group from the 1950's includes "Pink Panther Theme", "Tall Cool One", and "Scratchin'".

Sundazed is proud to rightfully address the magnificent Ventures’ catalog. Each title has been sourced from the original Dolton and Liberty Records’ reels and painstakingly mastered to sound and feel like they were originally intended. Along with precise artwork restoration on each title, these Sundazed editions stand as the definitive re-releases of these monumentally important albums. Long may they rock!

THE VENTURES 4 ORIGINAL ALBUMS DMM 180 GRAM 2LP (MONO)

In 1958, Bob Bogle and Don Wilson formed the nucleus of the original music group, The Ventures. The duo was joined a few years later by Nokie Edwards to record "Walk, Don't Run". The song hit Billboard's Singles Chart on July 18, 1960 and peaked at #2. The rest, as they say, is history. The band became one of the most popular and biggest selling acts of the 1960s, and was prolific during the 60's in terms of touring and recording, particularly albums.

Since that spectacular beginning, The Ventures - later joined by Mel Taylor, then Gerry McGee, and more recently Bob Spalding and Leon Taylor - have gone on to help define a frequently overlooked branch of rock and roll music - Instrumental Rock. The band is credited by countless guitar legends as being a favorite or an influence. The Ventures’ style and their music have, from day one, been unique and groundbreaking.

Walk Don't Run went to #2 on the charts in July, 1960. It was the first hit for The Ventures. The song was said to define a whole new instrumental music genre, that would lead to the surf guitar craze a few years later. In response to a question about the greatest guitar solos in guitar history, Joe Walsh recalls, “I don't really know if it's a solo or not, but I'd have to say that 'Walk, Don't Run' by The Ventures changed an awful lot of guitar players' lives. It was one of the foundational instrumentals. It made instrumentals okay to do... It had been done before with Duane Eddy, but with The Ventures, America discovered the vibrato bar. I didn't even play guitar at the time, but I loved Walk, Don't Run. I was just 13 when that came out in '60, and my mom was making me practice a stupid metal clarinet for orchestra. I borrowed a guitar just to learn how to play that lead part."

A key feature of the album, The Ventures, was the iconic cover photo. Not only were The Ventures dressed alike, defining the proper appearance of an early sixties combo, but guitar players and fans were fascinated by the sight of the Fender instruments; a Jazz Master, a Stratocaster, and a Precision Bass. Joe Walsh mentioned this in his praise of the song, Walk Don't Run. This album cover itself contributed to the growing influence of The Ventures in 1961 and the birth of guitar bands. In addition to Perfidia, this album also contained the group's third straight Top 40 chart single, Ram-Bunk-Shush, which first charted in January 1961.

Planned for release as The Ventures third album and numbered accordingly, Dolton 8006, Another Smash was actually released as the second set and charted second. It followed the Walk Don't Run album and was a second straight album chart top 40 entry. The marquee cuts, in addition to Lullaby of the Leaves, are Ghost Riders In The Sky (Don Wilson lead), Wheels, Bulldog, Rawhide, Meet Mr. Callahan, Last Date, and Beyond The Sea. The band also pays homage to one of their influences, Chet Atkins, with a fine version of Trambone. There is anecdotal evidence that Carole King arranged the string background on Josie.

"The fourth studio album from the Ventures, 1961's Colorful Ventures was the first in a long line of releases the band built around album title themes. Here the theme is colors, and so listeners get such songs as 'Blue Moon,' 'Yellow Jacket,' Cherry Pink and Apple Blossom White,' and so on... The album featured more of the group's recognizable instrumental rock & roll, surf rock, and country twang." - Rovi, allmusic
