If Dr. Byrds & Mr. Hyde found Roger McGuinn having to re-create the Byrds after massive personnel turnovers (and not having an easy time of it), Ballad of Easy Rider was the album where the new lineup really hit its stride. Gracefully moving back and forth between serene folk-rock (the title cut, still one of McGuinn's most beautiful melodies), sure-footed rock & roll ("Jesus Is Just All Right"), heartfelt country-rock ("Oil In My Lamp" and "Tulsa County"), and even a dash of R&B (the unexpectedly funky "Fido," which even features a percussion solo), Ballad of Easy Rider sounds confident and committed where Dr. Byrds & Mr. Hyde often seemed tentative. The band sounds tight, self-assured, and fully in touch with the music's emotional palette, and Clarence White's guitar work is truly a pleasure to hear (if Roger McGuinn's fabled 12-string work seems to take a back seat to White's superb string bends, it is doubtful that any but the most fanatical fans would think to object). While not generally regarded as one of the group's major works, in retrospect this release stands alongside Untitled as the finest work of the Byrds' final period.

Propelled by yet another round of personnel changes, the Byrds line-up of 1969 (York-Parsons [Gene, not Gram] - McGuinn - White) mustered one last burst of creative energy to finish this, the Byrds’ eighth, and by most accounts their last truly great album. By now, Roger McGuinn had decided that, no, harder and heavier sound of the previous album (Dr.Byrds and Mr.Hyde) was not in the band’s best interest and it contrasted too sharply with the band’s soft, melodic and folksy image. The result was the return to the soft, folksy, trippy  sound of the psychedelic Byrds, and an album’s worth of some nice harmonies, thoughtful, hummable tunes and crafty lyrics. A good move, I’d say. Too bad it did not last very long. The album contains diverse material of varying grades of quality, ranging from truly exceptional to downright forgettable. There are songs here which are some among the most memorable in all of Byrds’ oeuvre, as well as those you could not remember if they were played back to you ten times a day. "Jesus is just alright" is, of course, a late-Byrds classic, and so is the self-titled song, the Byrds’ entry in the legendary eponymous Movie about bikes, hogs and roaming free. Other nice moments are gentle "Oil in my lamp" and a nice version of Bob Dylan’s "It’s all over now baby blue" (Hmmm, well, it was - at least for the Byrds!). The album was produced by Terry Melcher (the son of Doris Day, who passed away a few weeks ago), whose head Charles Manson allegedly put a price on, but don’t be dissuaded by this ominous little bit of trivia; this is a very angelic and good-vibey album.

The PROMOTIONAL, RADIO STATION-, AUDITION OR DEMONSTRATION COPIES AND RELEASES (such as the one we have here) were often distributed among the radio stations before the record was released to the public, sometimes as much as four months ahead. These records are generally considered to be the "first among equals", which is to say the VERY FIRST generation and the VERY FIRST pressings of the particular title; a PROTOTYPE and the earliest known official pressing of the record.

(a)          WE GRADE THE VINYL  AS  (WEAK) NEAR MINT. Some VERY LIGHT AND SUPERFICIAL abrasions – mostly sleeve scuffs -  are (barely) visible, but are probably inaudible,  and do not affect visual integrity or beauty of the vinyl. The original luster is very much intact, and the vinyl shines and sparkles almost like new.

(b)          The record is pressed on a beautiful, thick, inflexible vinyl, which was usually used for the first or very early pressings. Usually, the sound on such thick vinyl pressings is full-bodied, vivid, and even dramatic. Do not expect to obtain such a majestic analog sound from a digital recording!

(c)           The record comes in the original stock inner sleeve.

(d)          Of course, this is a full-bodied ANALOG recording, and not an inferior, digital recording!!!

(e)           US Mono copies of this album are NOT known to exist.

·                               THE COVER

THE COVER IS NICE --- ABOUT EXCELLENT OR VERY GOOD++ (VG++).

The following flaws or imperfections are noted on the cover:

-        Cover has some light ring wear (nothing significant); On the scale from 1 to 10 (1 being the least, and  10 being the most severe), we assess the severity of ring wear as 3

-        Back cover has circular tarnish (grayish, dust-covered sections, which closely follow the contour of the record),  probably caused by friction or by rubbing against other covers during the storage. The tarnish is similar in appearance to a common ring wear, but, UNLIKE ring wear, these grayish areas may be possible to clean up with a minor effort and with a right cleansing solution.

-        Cover shows some light yellowing on back side, apparently from aging (nothing significant)

-        Minor shelf wear noted on the bottom seam (nothing significant)
