Vinyl:  VG++ Play Graded. Sounds Great!  Has a light mark that causes a very faint repeating tick sound far in the background of side 1 tracks 2 and 3 (faintly audible--I had to for the most part listen on the headphones to be able to faintly hear it).  Otherwise, this album is NM-.  Capitol Labels are Clean and Bright.  This is the RARE 1978 Capitol SPRO-8969 1ST PRESSING!  This is the audiophile acclaimed Pressing, Mastered by Wally Traugott and pressed at Capitol's Renowned Winchester, PA Pressing Plant!  This is an interesting release that has been pulled from "The Beatles Collection" Boxset, which was Originally released in 1978.  This Unique version of Rarities is different from the regular U.S. and U.K. Rarities releases.  It has the same running order of the British Rarities record except that it substitutes the German versions of I Want To Hold Your Hand and She Loves You for the English language versions of these songs.   A wild mix of Rare B-sides, many of them in MONO.  We go all the way from Early Beatlemania to the Wild B-side of one of their last singles, You Know My Name (Look Up The Number), which was actually recorded in 1967 with the Iconic 1st leader of The Rolling Stones, the Wild Brian Jones, along for the ride, as guest musician...Other Wildness is found in the lead track, Across The Universe, which is very different from the version on Let It Be, this one being the RARE version recorded and released on the Nothing's Gonna Change Our World compilation for the (super righteous) World Wildlife Fund, and features a couple of Apple Scruffs that the Lads brought in from their place of Vigil, outside the gates of Abbey Road, to come in and sing backup vocals on the track...Also here, Bad Boy, which was otherwise found only on an obscure British Compilation album...and on it goes, a feast of B-sides and as those latter-day Master/Monsters, Blue Oyster Cult so perfectly intoned:  "...Time Everlasting / Time to Play B-Sides..."  Indeed!  Enjoy!

Why buy a first or early pressing and not a re-issue or a ‘re-mastered’ vinyl album?  First and early pressings are pressed from the first generation lacquers and stampers. They usually sound vastly superior to later issues/re-issues (which, in recent times, are often pressed from whatever 'best' tapes or digital sources are currently available) - many so-called 'audiophile' new 180g pressings are cut from hi-res digital sources…essentially an expensive CD pressed on vinyl.  Why  experience the worse elements of both formats?  These are just High Maintenance CDs, with mid-ranges so cloaked with a veil as to sound smeared.  They are nearly always compressed with murky transients and a general lifelessness in the overall sound.  There are exceptions where re-masters/re-presses outshine the original issues, but they are exceptions and not the norm.  First or early pressings nearly always have more immediacy, presence and dynamics. The sound staging is wider.  Subtle instrument nuances are better placed with more spacious textures. Balances are firmer in the bottom end with a far-tighter bass. Upper-mid ranges shine without harshness, and the overall depth is more immersive.  Inner details are  clearer.   On first and early pressings, the music tends to sound more ‘alive’ and vibrant.  The physics of sound energy is hard to clarify and write about from a listening perspective, but the best we can describe it is to say that you can 'hear' what the mixing and mastering engineers wanted you to hear when they first recorded the music.   

Beatles Rarities Review

In 1978, Parlophone Records in the U.K. released The Beatles Collection, a boxed set containing the Beatles' 12 original U.K. albums. Since the British tendency in the 1960s was not to include singles on albums, this meant that the box did not contain more than 30 tracks that had only appeared in Britain on singles and EPs. To make up for that to some extent, Parlophone added to the box a Rarities album containing 17 of those stray tracks (in the U.S., the box was released in a limited edition with a slightly different Rarities album, not to be confused with the Rarities album released in the U.S. in 1980, which is completely different.) The idea was to include the least easily available of the lost tracks, so hits like "Hey Jude" weren't included. In 1979, Parlophone issued the Rarities album separate from the box, and heard on its own it comes across as a miscellaneous collection which demonstrates that even Beatles B-sides could be enjoyable performances.
