I under estimated the amount of interest and debate that this item would generate when it was first listed, and I thank all of you who emailed me adding to that process and exchange. I learned a lot! Whilst most of the attention was valuable and contributed greatly, there were (I'm sad to say) the odd few who took it upon themselves to make mischief. I was suspicious of some of the bidding patterns occuring (as were eBay) and this lead to the suspension and barring of certain members of the eBay community. So, with this in mind I respectfully request that only genuine, established and credible bidders get involved.
This is without doubt a remarkable, legendary and extraordinary LP for many reasons; it remains a milestone in rock recording history and this pressing is one of the first! It is possibly the rarest mainstream LP from the Fab Four. As I say this is an original pressing LP on the Gold/Black Parlophone label (a Stereo copy no less!) with the cat # PCS 3042. It is well documented that no more than 900 of these were ever pressed. Allowing for the passage of time, accident and incident, spilt coffee, careless siblings, worn styli and general carelessness, it's probably fair to say that there are a lot less than the original 900 available today (a LOT less!). This is a totally genuine item, ticking all the boxes. It comes in an original laminated flipack sleeve with the "Ernest J Day" sleeve printing credit. The record is still housed in it's original cellophane lined "Use Emitex Cleaning Cloths" liner. The label credits "The Dick James Music Co". The label also has "Stereo" in a gold ribbon. The matrix numbers are YEX 94-1 and YEX 95-1 further identifying (if further identification were needed) this as one of the very earliest pressings. This album contains the "A" and "B" sides of their first two singles, plus 10 "new" songs all recorded in one amazing, rollercoaster session at Abbey Road Studios during early 1963. Incredibly that session only cost a paltry £400 and lasted about 16 hours with many of the songs laid down in a single take! Can’t imagine that happening today! The album sold over 250,000 copies in 6 months and went on to sell over half-a-million in the U.K. with world sales of almost two million. It still holds the record for the longest continuous stay at number 1 for any LP. The cover photo was taken at EMI's Manchester Sq. headquarters by Angus McBean, and the sleeve notes are by Tony Barrow. Whilst trying to think of catchy names for their first album release, George Martin offered the title, "Off The Beatle Track", but this was dismissed. George clearly liked the name, however, using it himself in 1964. Despite "Please Please Me" being captured in a day it sounds fresh, precisely because of its intense origins. As the songs rush past, it's easy to get wrapped up in the sound of the record itself without realizing how the album effectively summarizes the band's eclectic influences. Naturally, the influences shine through their covers, all of which are unconventional and illustrate the group's superior taste. There's a love of girl groups, vocal harmonies, sophisticated popcraft, schmaltz, R&B, and hard-driving rock & roll, which is enough to make Please Please Me impressive, but what makes it astonishing is how these elements converge in the originals. "I Saw Here Standing There" is one of their best rockers, yet it has surprising harmonies and melodic progressions. "Misery" and "There's a Place" grow out of the girl group tradition without being tied to it. A few of their originals, such as "Do You Want to Know a Secret" and the pleasantly light "P.S. I Love You," have dated slightly, but endearingly so, since they're infused with cheerful innocence and enthusiasm. And there is an innocence to Please Please Me. The Beatles may have played notoriously rough dives in Hamburg, but the only way you could tell that on their first album was how the constant gigging turned the group into a tight, professional band that could run through their set list at the drop of a hat with boundless energy. It's no surprise that Lennon had shouted himself hoarse by the end of the session, barely getting through "Twist and Shout," the most famous single take in rock history. He simply got caught up in the music, just like generations of listeners did. The overall condition can be sumarized as follows. The Cover; There is some minor corner bending (spine side), there is a little softening on the sleeve opening (with a small tear), there is a little damage to flipback envelopes on the bottom of the back cover, this is only where it has been stored tho'. There is NO real delamination and I have graded the sleeve as VG+. The Record; There is some minor surface scuffing (as you would expect) with a small number of surface scratches which don't affect play. Labels; these are clean with little spindle marking. See pictures for clarification, I will be happy to take other pictures if you need them. I've been as objective and conservative as possible when grading this item. Considering most of these LP's probably spent most of their lives on Dancette turntables at house parties it's in remarkably good order. THE BEATLES Please Please Me Parlophone Gold/Black Label LP. PCS 3042 Stereo pressing. VG+/VG+. Grading = cover/record. The World's greatest music at ridiculous prices.
